Seventeen years after the death of the King of Pop, Michael Jackson’s massive fortune remains tied up in a complex legal battle.
Even though the estate is reportedly worth around $2 billion, Jackson’s daughter Paris and sons Prince and Bigi have yet to receive their full share.
The estate is currently controlled by co-executors John McClain and John Branca, whose handling of the finances has been heavily criticized by Paris, who launched a lawsuit accusing them of mismanagement after spotting alleged irregularities.
Paris’s lawsuit recently suffered a setback after a judge granted a petition from the co-executors to strike out parts of her case.
Still, the 28-year-old's team has said the fight is far from over as a representative told Entertainment Weekly: "This order is limited to minor procedural issues, and does not change the facts: the pattern of behavior displayed by the executors and their attorneys raises significant red flags.
"Paris will continue working to ensure her family is treated fairly. We will be submitting an updated filing shortly," they added.
Court documents also disclose the 'Let Down' musician's frustration with how the case has been handled.
"This overlitigation is a waste. At nearly every hearing... Executors try to avoid the merits by characterising Paris's concerns as lawyer-driven or in service of some purported desire for media attention. Neither is true," cited by The Independent.
"This litigation is painful for Paris. It is a distraction from her own life and her own career. She would rather there be no press coverage of it whatsoever," the documents state.
In addition to this, she accused the executors of using her father’s own money against her. "These attacks may serve Mr. Branca's personal interest in attempting to bully Paris into submission, but they have nothing to do with the merits of the litigation and are not in the interests of the Estate.
"The fact that Michael Jackson's money is paying for these attacks makes them even more offensive," they added.
While Jackson’s children continue to receive financial support through grants from the estate, the full inheritance remains on hold due to an unresolved tax issue.
Police have yet to determine exactly how much the estate owes, delaying any final distribution of wealth.
The ongoing legal battle comes as Jackson’s family continues to make headlines elsewhere.
Prince, 29, and Bigi, 24, recently made a rare public appearance at the premiere of the Michael biopic in Berlin, joined by several members of the Jackson family.
Paris, however, was notably absent from the event, instead spotted in West Hollywood spending time with friends.
She has also distanced herself from the film after actor Colman Domingo, who plays Joe Jackson in the movie, said that Paris and Prince were "very much in support of our film".
"Don’t be telling people I was ‘helpful’ on the set of a movie I had zero percent involvement in lol that is so weird," she responded to him, per The Guardian.
"I read one of the first drafts of the script and gave my notes about what was dishonest / didn’t sit right with me, and when they didn’t address it, I moved on with my life.
"Not my monkeys, not my circus. God bless and God speed," she added.
