People are only just discovering one of Netflix's scariest hidden gems and it's leaving social media users terrified.

Now, when you think of the horror genre, what first comes to mind?

Ghosts, murderers, exorcisms, monsters, something along those lines, right? Well, Netflix has recently taken a seemingly innocent concept and completely turned it on its head. So much so that it has left fans contemplating what they've just witnessed.

Old People is a horror movie from October 2022 that has recently been gaining traction for its "sadistic" nature, with many claiming that they had to "hide behind their hands" for large portions of it.

Check out the trailer:

The German horror written and directed by Andy Fetscher stars the likes of Adolfo Assor, Melika Foroutan and Anna Unterberger, and sees a bunch of fragile, grey-haired senior citizens turn into a bunch of blood-thirsty killers.

As per the official Netflix description, the movie tells the story of a woman who has returned home with her two kids to attend her sister's wedding and she suddenly finds herself "defending their lives against older people who are on a killing spree."

And this movie in particular seems to be the talk of the internet right now.

"Old People on Netflix," wrote one user. "Jesus that movie will have you on your toes."

"Old People on #Netflix might actually be the scariest film on there... It’s German but so dark. Actually had to hide behind my hands for most of the movie," added another.

A third even described it as "horrifying," writing: "Not entirely sure why I’m still watching It’s creepy, disgustingly horrifying, sadistic, and just messed up #oldpeople #netflix."

While the reviews by social media users might seem promising, it was less of a hit amongst critics.

In an article for Decider, film critic John Serba, urged fans to "skip" the movie in an installment of the publisher's review segment titled 'Stream It or Skip It?'

"Remarkably, writer-director Andy Fetscher elongates 25 minutes of movie into 100 – quite the achievement, considering the profound statement he’s trying to make is a finger-wagging: 'Hey, elder abuse isn’t nice,'" Serba writes before adding that it was just "old people [chasing] the youths and... it’s all the same zombie-movie tropes we’ve seen hundreds of times before."

Heaven of Horror contributor, Karina Adelgaard also rated the movie poorly, scoring an almost-pathetic 2 out of 5, writing that "the execution [was] lacking. It’s too slow, too long, and has side stories that should’ve been cut."

Not only that but of over 5,100 ratings on IMDb, Old People only scored a measly 5.1 our of 10, and on Rotten Tomatoes, it wasn't any better; only three people reviewed, making the page review-less overall.

Yikes.
