Andy Garcia's graphic reason he refuses to film sex scenes in movies
Stripping off before getting intimate often already requires quite the pair of figurative cajones, but to get your kit off on-screen in front of not just high-definition cameras that leave little to the imagination, but entire film crews, and audience members in their millions, takes a whole other level of self-assurance.
Unsurprisingly, many film and TV stars opt out of scenes where they're required to compromise their modesty, and The Untouchables actor Andy Garcia has publicly drawn a line.
That’s not to say Garcia has never appeared on screen in a vulnerable way. In fact, he did briefly strip down for a scene in the 2023 film Pain Hustlers, where he went for a nude swim. Still, he’s made it clear he has set his limits at more explicit scenes involving other actors.
Why has Garcia drawn the line at explicit scenes?
Explaining his stance, Garcia once said: “I have always believed that being emotionally explicit absolves me from the need to go further in a physical sense.”
He added: “I have taken my shirt off once or twice. But not to take anything else off is a matter of policy. The true romance and the true sexuality is in the foreplay.”
He expanded further on why he avoids such scenes, saying: “The act itself is private as far as I’m concerned.”
He also pointed to his role as a father, adding: “I raised three daughters and last thing I want my daughter to see is me… on screen. There were some great parts like that but I passed on them.”
Because of this, audiences shouldn’t expect to see Garcia taking on explicit romantic scenes in future projects. However, fans of his acting can still enjoy his recent work, including his role in Landman, where he stars alongside Billy Bob Thornton in intense, though not romantic, scenes.
Garcia's diverse history in film and television
In the series, Garcia plays cartel leader Danny ‘Gallino’ Morrell, one of several roles he’s taken on during a late-career renaissance. Earlier in his career, he rose to prominence with a major role in The Godfather Part III, directed by Francis Ford Coppola, where he starred alongside Al Pacino and Diane Keaton. His performance earned him nominations for both an Academy Award and a Golden Globe.
He went on to appear in several notable films, including When a Man Loves a Woman and Things to Do in Denver When You’re Dead. He also worked with the great Sidney Lumet on Night Falls on Manhattan, alongside Soprano’s leading man, the late James Gandolfini.
Today, Garcia has multiple projects in development, including a new installment in the Ocean’s franchise and a film with Pacino about the origins of Maserati — though, if his past comments are anything to go by, none are likely to feature explicit scenes involving him.
