Oscars slammed for 'unacceptable' move as KPop Demon Hunters makes Academy Award history
The Oscars has been criticized for making an ‘unacceptable’ move after KPop Demon Hunters made Hollywood history.
The hugely popular Netflix film topped the Billboard Hot 100 for eight weeks, amassed more than 500 million views and picked up the Best Original Song award for the global 2025 hit ‘Golden’.
The award-winning song alongside the animated movie which claimed the award for Best Animated Feature has helped propel the singing trio in the fictional band HUNTR/X of EJAE, Audrey Nuna, and Rei Ami, into global stardom.
Viewers blast Oscars for disgraceful move
After claiming the award, co-writer and co-director on KPop Demon Hunters Maggie Kang said in her acceptance speech: "For those of you who look like me, I’m so sorry that it took so long to see us in a movie like this, but it is here. That means the next generations don’t have to go longing.
"This is for Korea and Koreans everywhere."
Later, Kpop Demon Hunters, singer EJAE, alongside other producers, appeared on stage to accept another award for winning Best Original Song for Golden - which broke the record for becoming the first K-pop song to win the award.
However, soon after through her emotional speech, the audio was suddenly blocked out by music when prouder, Lee Yu-han, came to the microphone as the Oscars bizarrely went to a commercial break.
Immediately viewers took to X (formerly Twitter) to share their thoughts on the controversial move. "Omg this is so rude!! They just made history give them 5 extra seconds," one person said. While another raged: “You ruined the moment for the winners. How rude can you be?"

Backstage, EJAE expanded on what the team was going to say before the unexpected intervention. The singer revealed: "We feel very grateful and very honored. We all worked so hard and this is such a collaborative effort, we just need to thank our directors.
"They created a beautiful film. Everyone was a part of it and we are just so happy that the hard work paid off."
She also wanted to thank co-singers Rei Ami and Audrey Nuna, as she labeled them as 'incredible people' but she didn't get to do it 'because they just cut us off'.
EJAE rounded off by adding: "I would like to thank all our families, my fellow Idol members and Teddy Park. This is an incredible honor."
