Grab your robes and dust off your wand - the original cast of the Harry Potter films are reuniting for a one-off special.
Set to stream on New Years Day 2022 on HBO Max, Harry Potter: Return to Hogwarts will see Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson join director Chris Columbus for a special program in honor of the first movies' 20-year anniversary.
HBO Max who produced the show said it will feature "all-new-in-depth interviews and cast conversations, inviting fans on a magical first-person journey through one of the most beloved film franchises of all time."
The reunion was announced yesterday, exactly 20 years on from the first film's US release on November 16, 2001.
HBO Max shared a trailer featuring clips from the original films. Alongside the starring trio of Radcliffe, Grint, and Watson, the trailer promised the return of much-loved supporting stars Helena Bonham Carter, Robbie Coltrane, Ralph Fiennes, Jason Isaacs, Gary Oldman, Imelda Staunton, and Tom Felton.
Watson, who played Hermione Granger in all eight films, shared the news in an Instagram post.
"Harry Potter was my home, my family, my world," she wrote. "We hope you enjoy the Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts which will stream on New Year's day, Jan. 1 on HBO Max. Lots to look forward to."
Tom Felton, who played school-bully Draco Malfoy, also promoted the show as he urged fans to save the date.
"Is this what school homecoming is like?" he Tweeted. "Mark your calendars for New Years Day."
Unsurprisingly fans are ecstatic about the news, with many taking to social media to share their excitement.
"I'M CRYING. Thank you," one fan commented on Instagram. "Reunion of the century," Tweeted another.
"I have never waited for a new year ever before like this," wrote a third.
Author JK Rowling's name was nowhere to be seen in the announcement. The writer's controversial statements about transgender people have garnered criticism in recent years, with many labeling her as transphobic.
Sources close to the project revealed that the special will focus primarily on the films and their central cast, as per The Hollywood Reporter.
Though she won't make a special appearance, Rowling will feature in archival footage.
