IKEA has taken a shot at Balenciaga's $925 'towel skirt' using one of their own products.
Now, the world of high-end fashion is always hit and miss. While you get the classic, staple items that help brands make a name for themselves, you also get some new, modern additions that completely tarnish that.
In recent times, Balenciaga has become an embodiment of that concept, bringing out new lines including the "croc heel" and the "trash bag", that have left the internet ripping them to shreds.
Their latest fashion faux pas is none other than a skirt that resembles a towel.
The product, which retails at a whopping $925, is made from cotton and is available in multiple different colors and wraps perfectly around one's waist to give you that ultimate shower-core look. The model on the website gives fans a glimpse of how to style the look, wearing a pair of wide-leg, oversized combat trousers with a black hoodie and black-out shades.
Currently, the item is only available on pre-order, but you can add your name to the list if you fancy spending almost a month's salary on a towel to wrap around your waist. I mean, personally, I would never, but if you're brave enough to walk around like that then... props, I guess.
After seeing the unique look, people took to social media to slam the brand for their invention.
"I never watch the news. Decide to turn it on and I see Balenciaga wants $925 for a skirt that’s a towel? Changed the channel immediately," wrote one user.
"Aspiring fashion designers: fashion design school for 4 years, internships, etc... #balenciaga : here’s a Bed, Bath & Beyond liquidation terry cloth towel wrap for $925," added another.
"Balenciaga’s $925 towel skirt... f*** fashion bruh," a third stated, while this user urged the brand to get a grip, writing: "Balenciaga is selling a towel wrapped around somebody’s waist as a skirt for $925 please be f****** for real."
And this user roasted the high-end company stating: "Balenciaga is now selling a $925 towel... that’s $925 just to dry your a**... Who is buying this?"
But perhaps the most savage of them all: cue IKEA.
The Swedish home-wear brand took things to a whole new level after they decided to post their rendition of the skirt to their website - which was later re-posted to Instagram - using one of their classic Vinarn towels which retails at approximately $20 - a fraction of the price to achieve the same look.
