Designer Bob Mackie has slammed the decision to allow Kim Kardashian to wear Marilyn Monroe's dress.
The reality TV star made headlines earlier this month at the Met Gala when she donned the iconic gown, which Marilyn famously wore to serenade President Kennedy for his 45th birthday.
Though many thought Kim looked dazzling in the sparkling dress, others were not pleased that she had worn such an important piece of American history down the red carpet.
Among those who Kim failed to win over was costume designer Mackie, who sketched Marilyn in the dress just months before the Hollywood starlet died.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Mackie blasted the decision, saying: "I thought it was a big mistake."
The veteran designer went on to say that as far as he was concerned, no-one should have ever word the gown except the "goddess" for whom it was made.
"[Marilyn] was a goddess. A crazy goddess, but a goddess. She was just fabulous. Nobody photographs like that. And it was done for her. It was designed for her," he said, adding: "Nobody else should be seen in that dress."
The glittering gown - which was loaned to Kim by Ripley's Believe It Or Not! museum - is the most expensive dress ever sold at auction, where it fetched a whopping $4.8 million. Because of its rich history, the garment couldn't be altered in any way, and Kim revealed she went on a strict diet in the run-up to the gala so she wear the gown.
In an interview with Vogue, the SKIMS founder revealed that she dropped 16 pounds in just a few weeks. "I would wear a sauna suit twice a day, run on the treadmill, completely cut out all sugar and all carbs, and just eat the cleanest veggies and protein," she told the outlet, adding: "I didn’t starve myself, but I was so strict."
Meanwhile, the sequined nude dress wasn't the only one of Marilyn's gowns Kim donned for the Gala. In a later Instagram post, she revealed that she also had the chance to try on the piece she wore for the Golden Globes in 1962.
"To top off my night after The Met, I had the honor of changing into Marilyn Monroe’s Norman Norell dress that she wore to the Golden Globes in 1962—where she received the Henrietta Award For World Film Favorite," Kim wrote on Instagram.
"It will forever be one of the greatest privileges of my life to be able to channel my inner Marilyn in this way, on such a special night," she added.
