Jim Carrey has expanded on his previous comments regarding Will Smith slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars.

In an interview earlier this week, the actor and comedian said that if he was in Rock's shoes, he would have sued Smith for $200 million.

The King Richard star shocked the world last weekend when he march on stage and slapped Rock after the comedian poked fun at his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.

Talking to the Associated Press more recently, Carrey clarified that he felt Smith had violated "boundaries" - and that he shouldn't have slapped Rock because his wife is a "tough girl" capable of defending herself.

"I see it as a larger issue, and it’s an issue of the boundaries being broken – boundaries and allowances and permissiveness to certain behaviors," Carrey said.

"The fact is that license is being given to people to act out violently when they don’t like what they hear. And it just shouldn’t be," the Liar Liar star added.

Carrey went on to say that he felt sorry for Smith, who he suspected was buckling under the inordinate pressure of fame and stardom.

"People not unlike Will, or myself, we live in a lot of pressure," he explained, adding that the jaw-dropping altercation at the Oscars was an example of people "living beyond [their] bandwidth and cracking under the pressure."

"That’s what that was. It was more than just an insult to someone’s wife. Jada’s a tough girl. She can defend herself. She wasn’t being physically attacked. What that was was someone who was beyond the bandwidth, and he thought more about how he was looking in that moment than what was the right thing to do," Carrey said.

While presenting the Academy Award for Best Documentary at Sunday night's Academy Award, Rock joked that Pinkett Smith might be set to appear in the next GI Jane movie because of her closely shaven head.

Pinkett Smith - who suffers from alopecia - was clearly not amused by the gag, and could be seen rolling her eyes in the audience. Moments later, her husband strode on stage and slapped Rock across the face.

As Smith returned to his seat, Rock tried to diffuse the tension. But Smith only made things more awkward by shouting at him from the audience: "keep my wife's name out of your f***ing mouth!"
