Jane Fonda went off script after she hilariously threw the Palme d'Or at the winning director during the Cannes Film Festival.

On May 27, the 85-year-old Hollywood icon was presenting the award to French filmmaker Justine Triet for her film Anatomy Of A Fall - a dramatic thriller that tells the story of a woman battling accusations that she murdered her husband.

After the 44-year-old proudly accepted the accolade and stepped down from the podium, she accidentally left her scroll lying on the lectern.

So, as Triet walked away, Fonda tried to grab her attention but became exasperated when she didn't meet the recipient’s eye. Therefore, the well-known activist decided to kauch the certificate at the creative instead.

However, the director didn't seem to react to the Grace and Frankie actress which prompted a sigh of disbelief from Fonda who threw her arms in the air in defeat.

A man onstage then picked up the piece of paper and attempted to turn it over to Triet, who was so caught up in the moment that she still neglected to notice.

Many users took to the social media platform to heap praise on the A-lister after seeing the humorous video. One fan remarked: "I love that woman. She's the real deal."

Another user commented: "Jane Fonda never fails to amaze us with her boldness and wit! That moment was pure gold, just like the Palme d'Or certificate she threw at Justine Triet," while a third person said: "Jane Fonda is the gift that keeps on giving."

The French filmmaker was one of a record-breaking seven female directors in the running for this year's Palme d'Or and was only the third woman to win in history.

While presenting the prize onstage, Fonda noted that the first Cannes Film Festival she attended was in 1963, adding: "There were no women directors competing at that time, and it never even occurred to us that there was something wrong with that."

The Academy-winning actress has been a recipient of the prestigious event herself when she won an honorary Palme d’Or in 2007 and the Kering Women In Motion Award in 2015.

This year, she gave an in-depth interview at this year's Rendezvous with Jane Fonda event at the Salle Buñuel where she dished the dirt on her old collaborators. She accused Robert Redford of having "an issue with women" and claimed that Michael Douglas "probably doesn’t like me," as cited by Deadline.

Fonda also expressed a personal dislike for Jean-Luc Godard, saying: "He was a great filmmaker. I take my hat off. A great filmmaker. But as a man? I’m sorry. No, no," but on the other hand described Lee Marvin as "fabulous" and "always drunk."

However, she heartwarmingly added that working with her father and Katharine Hepburn on On Golden Pond was "one of the most glorious experiences of my life. It was absolutely wonderful".
