Johnny Depp has been caught laughing at Amber Heard's attorney during the former celebrity couple's $50 million defamation trial.

On Monday, Heard's lawyer Ben Rottenborn appeared to mistakenly object to his own question - prompting Pirates of the Caribbean star Depp to snigger with his team.

The actor, 58, is suing his ex-wife over a 2018 op-ed she wrote for The Washington Post, in which she claimed to be a victim of domestic abuse. Following the allegations, Depp was dropped from several big-budget projects including the Pirates of the Caribbean movies and Harry Potter prequel franchise Fantastic Beasts.

When Ben King - Depp's house manager - took the stand for his testimony, he was asked to recall an incident where Depp's finger was severed - allegedly by his ex-wife.

"Dr. Kipper had told me he had sustained an injury on one of his --" the house manager began, before being interrupted by Rottenborn.

"Objection - hearsay," said the attorney. The judge responded in bewilderment and reminded Rottenborn that he was the one who had asked about the incident, saying: "Wait - you asked the question."

Meanwhile, footage of the moment shows Depp and his lawyer giggling quietly together over Rottenborn's slip up.

This certainly isn't the first time that there's been laughter in the courtroom in Fairfax County, Virginia, where the blockbuster trial is taking place.

Courtroom attendees were warned to maintain order on Monday after Depp prompted them to burst out laughing when he could not remember any of his own franchise films.

After naming Alice in Wonderland, Depp seemed to draw a blank, then cracked a joke about avoiding watching his own films.

"I'm so pathetic when it comes to knowing what movies I've done," he said with a smile, per The Independent. "I'm sorry. I just, I don't watch them. I feel better not watching them. What was the question again?"

The actor's answer was enough to make several people in the courtroom laugh loudly. Judge Azcarate hushed them and even threatened to have them kicked out, saying: "Order in the court or I will have you removed. Understood? Thank you."
