Kim Kardashian has revealed that she initially had doubts about the all-black Balenciaga outfit that she wore to the 2021 Met Gala.

The reality star, 40, turned heads at the event by turning up in an all-black bodysuit that included a full face covering - with her long hair scraped back into a ponytail that dangled behind her.

The outfit, which was made by Georgian fashion icon Demna Gvasalia, the creative director of Balenciaga, also included a long black trail, as well as gloves that ensured no part of Kim's skin was on show.

Speaking to Vogue about her daring choice of outfit, Kardashian touched on what made her opt for the fully-covered ensemble.

But the out-there look wasn't appreciated as much as Kardashian may have hoped, and it was quickly given the meme treatment on social media - with some people joking that Kim had turned up to the event dressed as a dementor from Harry Potter.

"I fought against it. I was like, I don't know how I could wear the mask. Why would I want to cover my face?" she revealed.

She added: "But Demna and the team were like, 'This is a costume gala. This is not a Vanity Fair party where everyone looks beautiful. There's a theme and you have to wear the mask. That is the look.'"

While reflecting on Kardashian’s outfit, Demna told the outlet that the mask covering her face was "conceptually speaking, quite important" because "people would know instantly it was Kim because of her silhouette".

"They wouldn’t even need to see her face, you know? And I think that’s the whole power of her celebrity, that people wouldn’t need to see her face to know it’s her," the designer added.

The theme for last year's Met Gala was 'In America: A Lexicon of Fashion', and while some celebrity looks appeared to hit this assignment on the nose - Billie Eilish channeling Marilyn Monroe, for example - there's more to the reality TV star's look than meets the eye.

Kardashian shared images from her look with her 253 million fans after the event, captioning it: "What’s more American than a T-shirt head to toe?!"
