Sabrina Carpenter fans convinced she will be 'cancelled' after comments on stage at Coachella
Fans of popstar sensation Sabrina Carpenter are fearing that her reputation will take a hit after she shared an awkward exchange with a fan on-stage at Coachella.
Carpenter, 26, is one of the hottest names in music right now, and took to the main Coachella stage to perform an Old Hollywood-themed set on Friday (April 10).
While she went all out with songs such as 'Please Please Please' and 'Manchild' in front of thousands of adoring fans, it was a moment between songs which rubbed fans the wrong way.
Sabrina Carpenter questions fans' "call of celebration"
After performing the former, she told the crowd: "I think I heard someone yodel," as the fan repeated the noise.
She asked: "Is that what you’re doing? I don’t like it."
When the fan told her that it was their culture, she replied: "That’s your culture, is yodeling?"
Continuing the exchange, the fan said it was "a call of celebration," to which Carpenter joked: "Is this Burning Man? What’s going on? This is weird."
What was the fan doing?
Carpenter's fans quickly took to social media to speak about the exchange, as one posted the video captioned: "They’re gonna cancel her for this, aren’t they…"
She can be seen sitting on a piano onstage during the exchange as the fan 'ululates' - which is a high-pitched sound that is usually carried out when one feels strong emotion.
While there are roots in African culture, the call is known as "zaghrouta" in Middle Eastern cultures, where it is done by women as an act of celebration or joy.
Fans think the singer could get cancelled
One of her fans wrote on X: "I think she genuinely wasn’t coming from a bad place, but when someone says 'that’s my culture' put ur PR training to use and DON'T DOUBLE DOWN!
"I didn’t know that culture either, but I wouldn’t double down if someone said that was their culture."
Another said: "She’s so odd for this, calling someone’s culture weird."
A third commented: "B4 the Sabrina stans come for me I am not calling her racist, I’m just calling her stupid."
Another argued that Carpenter is a singer who "dabbles into country," so she should know what yodeling sounds like, but another hit back: "So no, this excuse doesn’t work. She was being mean-spirited & that’s okay to admit."
Other fans defended the singer
One fan said on Reddit: Kind of crazy that everyone expected Sabrina to know what it was right off the bat while she was getting ready to play another song in front of THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE."
Others gave her the benefit of the doubt, pointing out that it was probably hard for her to hear and that she was genuinely caught off guard by the call.
A different fan claimed: "I am Middle Eastern, I didn’t take offense, she didn’t understand and thought they were heckling her… yes she didn’t understand when they told her it’s cultural either because why would she? A Caucasian American who I’m assuming is not aware about the types of celebrations around the world."
Someone else claimed that "she doesn’t call the zaghrouta weird," but instead that someone would do it mid-show.
Sabrina Carpenter's apology
The day after the incident though, Carpenter took to X, saying: "My apologies,
"I didn’t see this person with my eyes and couldn’t hear clearly. My reaction was pure confusion, sarcasm, and not ill-intended. Could have handled it better!
"Now I know what a zaghrouta is!" she said, adding: "I welcome all cheers and yodels from here on out."
