Netflix has edited a joke that Chris Rock made about Will Smith in his new stand-up comedy special Selective Outrage.
Rock, 58, and Smith, 53, have had a tumultuous 12 months, made all the more painful by the intense fallout from last year's Academy Awards ceremony.
That fateful night will be forever immortalized by Smith storming onto the stage and slapping Rock in the face for making a G.I. Jane joke about Smith's wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.
"Keep my wife's name out your f**king mouth," has also become a phrase that feels almost as recognizable as Schwarzenegger's "I'll be back" or "Get to the chopper!"
Either way, the outrageous outburst from Smith landed him a decade-long ban from the Oscars. He has since apologized to Rock, both in the form of an Instagram post the day after the incident, and a public apology to everyone in general via YouTube a while later.
"Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive. My behavior at last night's Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable. Jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about Jada's medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally," Smith said.
"I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness," he added.
Obviously, Smith was a hot topic in Rock's latest special. He addressed the situation throughout, saying "everybody knows what the f**k happened" and that he "had nothing to do with that".
"For people that don’t know, well everybody knows, but Will Smith's wife was f***ing her son's friend. Okay? I normally would not talk about this s**t, but, for some reason, they put it on the internet," he continued.
Rock was, of course, referencing the 2020 episode of Red Table Talk when Jada and Will discussed her "entanglement" with rapper August Alsina. According to a source, Alsina himself even watched the special and enjoyed it, with the New York Post, the revealing: "August watched the Netflix special and he laughed. He thought it was not only funny but truthful. That was the best part for him."
However, there was one part of the special that has apparently now been edited out as, in one instance, Rock fumbles slightly with one of his jokes.
The comedian states that he believes his beef with the Smiths actually began in 2016 after Smith wasn't nominated for his movie Concussion. At the time, Pinkett Smith was reportedly pretty mad that Rock didn't pull out of hosting the ceremony in solidarity. Though, Rock accidentally gets the name of the movie wrong during his set, admitting he messed up halfway through the joke, per Decider.
Netflix has since edited out the blunder, something viewers have taken note of. Vulture's Jesse David Fox tweeted: "they fixed the Concussion-Emancipation slip up in the version that's now on Netflix," adding in a later tweet: "it makes one wonder if there has been other tweaks!"
"I liked it! He flubbed for a second and then when he repeated the punchline it still worked. But I understand," someone else added.
