Netflix viewers have stumbled across a horror series that has left them "scared for their lives."

Marianne initially hit our screens back in 2019 before it was canceled, but the French horror series has seen a resurgence in popularity over the past few weeks thanks to social media.

For those of you that have never watched it before, Marianne tells the story of a famous horror writer who goes back to her hometown only to find out that the evil spirit that once plagued her dreams when she was younger is actually there in real life.

Reviews on the show were hugely positive, with Decider's John Serba urging fans to stream it.

"Horror season is creeping up on us like a madman in the bushes, and Marianne will likely satisfyingly scratch your itch for scary stuff," Serba said in his lengthy review.

Though it also proved to be a hit amongst fans, securing a very impressive 94% Rotten Tomatoes rating, the TV series got canceled after the first season.

Of course, Netflix users were devastated over the news.

This user wrote: "I'm still upset that this incredible, creepy and brilliant show got cancelled! It really makes me wanna cancel you #Netflix #Marianne best horror show I've seen in a while, it genuinely scared me!"

"Another spooky throwback - doll inspired by the Netflix series 'Marianne', which I loved. Amazing scenery, chilling performances and intriguing storyline. Would have loved a second season," another added.

Others spoke about how terrifying the actual show was, with one user stating that they were "scared for my life."

"Just finished the first episode of #Netflix’s #Marianne and am I am scared for my life. Good start," wrote one user, while another added: "I’ve been watching this show on Netflix called #Marianne and it’s the first time in decades I’ve gotten scared of the dark because of something terrifying I watch on TV or a movie."

A third described it as "devilishly wicked."

The good thing about Marianne is that despite it only having one season, you get a fully-fledged storyline - with a resolution - so you don't have to finish it off feeling unsatisfied.

However, the show's creator, Samuel Bodin told news outlet Bloody Disgusing that he had several plans for at least two follow-up seasons.

When asked "how many seasons might the show have gone, and how much planning and writing had gone into blocking out those follow-up seasons?" Bodin responded: "At the time, I really wanted to do three seasons. The story in my head takes three seasons, three acts for me. Three big chapters."

"With Quoc Dang Tran, my co-writer, we had started to work on the second season because Netflix loved the show," he continued. "And they asked us to start writing very soon after Season 1’s release. So with Quoc and another writer, Julien Honoré, we started working."

At the very least, fans can still watch the first season in all of its horror glory.
