Soccer legend Pelé is set to be laid to rest on the ninth floor of a 'vertical cemetery', which will see him overlooking the pitch where he cemented his legacy as one of the best players of all time.
Pelé - full name Edson Arantes do Nascimento - passed away in Brazil on December 28 aged 82 following a battle with cancer.
The icon's death sent shockwaves around the world of soccer as the stadiums of the English Premier League fell silent before kick-off this weekend to remember the man who many say to be the King of the sport.
Pelé began his professional career in 1956 with Brazilian side Santos - and this is where he remained until 1974 before a brief spell at New York Cosmos where he hung up his boots in 1977.
It has now been revealed that Pelé is set to be laid to rest in a tomb that overlooks the Vila Belmiro stadium, where the star set record after record for nearly two decades.
As per The Mirror, it was Pelé's wish to be buried on the ninth floor of the Memorial Necropole Ecumenica in memory of his father, who was also a soccer player that wore the number nine jersey.
The vertical cemetery, built in 1983, is the tallest in the world, and Pelé will rest there in a coffin painted a golden color with carvings and etchings of the Brazilian on either side, per reports.
As reported by GOAL, Pelé's funeral will take place on January 3 and the country will go into a period of mourning for three days as they honor the man who will forever be at the forefront of Brazilian soccer history.
He is the only player in history to win three World Cups, which he achieved in 1958, 1962, and 1970, the first of which he was just 17 years old.
Pelé was named athlete of the century by the French sports outlet L’Equipe in 1980 and received the same honor from the International Olympic Committee in 1999, per Britannica.
The icon is currently Brazil's top international goal scorer with 77 goals in just 92 games, with current superstar Neymar on the same tally.
Pelé will forever be remembered in the world of soccer and his legacy is one that will be remembered for generations to come.
Our thoughts remain with Pelé's family, friends and fans at this time.
