A petition calling for Amber Heard to be removed from Aquaman 2 has racked up over two million signatures.
The 36-year-old actor is currently embroiled in a blockbuster defamation lawsuit against her ex-husband Johnny Depp, who is suing her for $50 million over a 2018 Washing Post op-ed in which she claimed to have been domestically abused.
Since the trial started two weeks ago, fans of Pirates of the Caribbean star Depp have rallied behind him and echoed his claim that it was Heard who was abusive in their relationship.
Now, a Change.org petition asking for Heard to be removed from the upcoming Aquaman sequel - in which, she is set to play the superhero's love interest Mera - has amassed over two million signatures.
"Amber Heard has been exposed as a domestic abuser by Johnny Depp," reads the petition, which was started by Jeanne Larson and addresses DC Entertainment and Courtney Simmons, the SVP for Publicity & Communications for DC Warner Bros.
Larson goes on to list the "many incidents of domestic abuse" that Depp has claimed, "he suffered at the hands of his (then) wife Amber Heard." Among these is an occasion when Depp says she severed his finger with a broken liquor bottle, and another when she allegedly punched him in the face.
"Men are victims of domestic abuse, just like women. This must be recognized, and action must be taken to prevent a known abuser from being celebrated within the entertainment industry," the petition continues, concluding: "Do the right thing. Remove Amber Heard from Aquaman 2."
Since Heard first claimed to have suffered domestic abuse in 2018, Depp has been dropped from many big-budget projects including the much-loved Disney franchise Pirates of the Caribbean and the Harry Potter prequel series Fantastic Beasts.
The petition first caught traction when it was announced that Depp was being replaced in the third Fantastic Beasts movie. With more details about the celebrity couple's volatile relationship coming to light during their trial, the petition has once again taken off.
Last week, the court was played an audio recording of Heard admitting she hit Depp. The clip - in which she taunts her then-husband to "tell the world" and "see how many people believe or side with you" - has gone viral across social media channels and helped sway public opinion in Depp's favor.
Aquaman 2 - titled Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom - is set for release in March next year.
