This is not a drill - the fifth Shrek movie is on the way and the original cast might be returning in what will likely be an incredible reunion.

Shrek remains an absolute classic series of movies that people flock to see multiple times as it offers some hilarious moments and great storytelling.

For those who aren't up to speed (which I can't imagine is many), Shrek follows the story of a grumpy Ogre whose desire to reclaim his swamp turns into an epic adventure.

Befriending a funny, charming albeit very talkative donkey, Shrek rescues Princess Fiona from a dragon-guarded tower before marrying her - which is only the start of his adventures.

The titular character, along with all manner of fairy tale creatures, battles all sorts of enemies such as a fairy godmother and Rumplestiltskin in the sequels.

The term Shrek is love, Shrek is life comes to mind as fans across the globe are about to get really excited as a fifth Shrek movie has been confirmed.

In an interview with Variety, Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri, who is also a creative partner to DreamWorks Animation has confirmed the incredible news.

Meledandri is currently gearing up for the release of the Mario movie starring Chris Pratt, but he couldn't resist sharing the news about everyone's favorite Ogre.

When discussing the announcement, Meledandri said: "It’s not that dissimilar to the process that we went through with ‘Mario,’ where you look at what the core elements are that audiences have loved, and you do your very best to honor those core elements.

"And then you’re hard at work to build story elements and new characters that take you to brand new places. The original cast is a huge part of that."

While there are no deals currently in place with the original cast which includes Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, and Eddie Murphy, things are looking very promising.

"We anticipate the cast coming back. Talks are starting now, and every indication that we’ve gotten is there’s tremendous enthusiasm on behalf of the actors to return," Meledandri stated.

The movie will be the first since 2010 though let's be real, it feels like an eternity since the iconic green character and his friends graced our screens.

The news comes after a Shrek spinoff Puss in Boots: The Last Wish received critical acclaim, further igniting the desire for a new movie, especially as Puss uses his movie to express that he wants to team up with some old friends.

There are absolutely no doubts that any new Shrek film will go down very well with fans.
