LeBron James had an infuriating evening over the weekend after his team lost their game due to a "gut-wrenching" referee error.

James' team - the Los Angeles Lakers - had been playing a tense match against the Boston Celtics when the 38-year-old missed what appeared to be a game-winning shot, per the BBC.

However, the referees didn't call a foul and the game eventually went into overtime. The Celtics ended up winning 125-121.

Following the refereeing error, the National Basketball Referees Association wrote about the "gut-wrenching" incident on Twitter: "Like everyone else, referees make mistakes."

Watch James react to the crushing defeat below:

The statement continued: "We made one at the end of last night's game and that is gut-wrenching for us. This play will weigh heavily and cause sleepless nights as we strive to be the best referees we can be."

Though, the tweet was met with harsh criticism from netizens, who took the opportunity to voice their displeasure at the game's result.

"Really don't care if you have sleepless nights. Care that you have cost the Lakers multiple games in the last month. It's gotta stop. You owe the Lakers four games," one person tweeted.

Another person added: "The in-game officials should NOT be the same ones that review calls!! There should be a central reviewing authority that informs them if a call is overturned. The officials in the game have too big egos to overturn the calls against themselves!"

"Fire or suspend the refs that missed the call. Something needs to be done. You are single handedly hurting the product of the NBA and losing the league viewers and fans. Accountability needs to be prioritized," another comment read.

"Except unlike everyone else you guys make the same exact mistakes over and over again call stupid technicals with your superiority complex and go home with no accountability everytime," a further user chimed in.

Following the incident, James was jumping up and down in exasperation, which was caught on camera.

James' teammate Anthony Davis stated after the game that the Lakers had been "cheated," saying: "It's unacceptable and I guarantee nothing is going to happen to the refs [...] We got cheated. To miss a call that blatant, the ref is sitting right there on the baseline, it's tough. It's not fair. I guarantee if the refs started getting fined for missed calls, it would be a lot better. But nothing's going to be done."

James then added: "We don't have room for error. This is one of the best games we've played all year, and for this to fall on somebody else's judgment or non-judgment is ridiculous. It's ridiculous."
