The legendary singer Tina Turner has passed away aged 83 following a long illness.

Tina was born in Nutbush, Tennessee, USA, with the name Anna Mae Bullock on November 26 in 1939.

She rose to fame alongside her ex-husband Ike Turner, with the pair releasing hits such as River Deep and Mountain High.

The turbulent divorce between the pair in 1978 meant that Tina found herself attempting to forge a solo career from the ground up.

The extent of her abusive relationship with her ex-husband was documented in the 1993 movie What's Love Got To Do With It where Angela Bassett portrayed the legendary singer, and the movie picked up three Oscars.

Tina was diagnosed with intestinal cancer in 2016 and had a kidney transplant a year later.

As per Sky News, a statement by her representative read: "Tina Turner, the 'Queen of Rock'n Roll' has died peacefully today at the age of 83 after a long illness in her home in Küsnacht near Zurich, Switzerland. With her, the world loses a music legend and a role model."

Tina's official Instagram profile wrote: "It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Tina Turner. With her music and her boundless passion for life, she enchanted millions of fans around the world and inspired the stars of tomorrow.

"Today we say goodbye to a dear friend who leaves us all her greatest work: her music. All our heartfelt compassion goes out to her family. Tina, we will miss you dearly."

Following the successful rise of her solo career, Tina said: "I battled hard to be the first black female solo rock artist to fill stadiums."

According to the Mirror, Tina sold more than 180 million albums during her career and won a staggering 12 Grammy awards.

She retired from live performances in 2009 following a 50th-anniversary tour where she played 37 sold-out shows across the US which gained her nearly $50 million.

The star revealed to the US Sun earlier this year that she had insured her legs for $2 million. She said: "Sometimes I think I’m as famous for my legs as much as my voice."

Sadly, Tina laid her son, Ronnie, to rest late last year as she wrote: "Ronnie, you left the world far too early. In sorrow, I close my eyes and think of you, my beloved son."

Ronnie, who Tina shared with Ike Turner, passed away aged 62 after he reportedly had a history of health problems.

Tina's life has since been immortalized in the popular musical Tina, which is still having a successful run in London's West End.

Some of Tina's most popular tracks include What's Love Got To Do With It, The Best, and Typical Male.

A private ceremony for her close family and friends will be held so they can mourn the passing of their loved one.

Our thoughts are with Tina's friends, family, and fans at this time.
