In the final known photo of her, Tina Turner was seen celebrating "some of the proudest moments" of her life.

The legendary singer passed away aged 83 following an incredible career that saw her sell over 150 million albums worldwide.

The heartbreaking news of her death was confirmed by her publicist, and her official Instagram account wrote: "It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Tina Turner. With her music and her boundless passion for life, she enchanted millions of fans around the world and inspired the stars of tomorrow.

"Today we say goodbye to a dear friend who leaves us all her greatest work: her music. All our heartfelt compassion goes out to her family. Tina, we will miss you dearly."

Most of us know Turner as the voice behind mega hits like 'The Best' and 'What's Love Got To Do With It?', having forged a wildly successful solo career during the 1980s and 1990s after leaving her husband and music partner Ike Turner in 1978.

While the pair were known to have had a turbulent marriage, the intricate details of their toxic and abusive relationship weren't made public until Turner released her 1986 memoir I, Tina and subsequent 1993 biopic. Starring Angela Bassett, the dramatic movie depicted how Turner and Ike burst onto the music scene during the 1960s and 1970s, but how Ike's physically and sexually abusive behavior eventually forced Turner to quit the band and go solo.

Turner's name was copyrighted by Ike, so when Turner eventually left their marriage she was forced to build her career from the ground up - eventually seeing her tie with Pat Benatar for the most Grammys won for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance.

In 2021, Turner took to Twitter to post a photo of herself posing in front of her TV, just five days before her documentary Tina was released.

"Only 5 days left! This Saturday, the documentary TINA will be released. I am so excited to share this movie with you - seeing the concert scenes made me relive some of the proudest moments of my life," she wrote on Twitter. "I simply had to sing along and dance around my living room!"

The HBO documentary centers around Turner's initial rise to fame and how she overcame personal struggles to achieve global stardom during her 40s in the 1980s.

Having received an impressive 92% on Rotten Tomatoes, critics praised the project for revisiting Turner's admirable bravery and resilience, with The Chicago-Sun Times' Richard Roeper writing: "The uplifting movie blends the singer's dramatic life story, of abuse and struggle and triumphant comeback, with knockout performance clips."

The Guardian stated: "Even if you don't know the backstory, it is all astonishing to watch. If you have ever seen Turner, you will know - and if you haven't, I cannot capture her talent and charisma with only the paltry resource of the written word at my disposal."

Our thoughts are with Tina Turner's family, friends, and fans at this tragic time.
