Doctor explains reason behind worrying 'gym penis' phenomenon
A doctor has revealed the true reason behind the “gym penis” trend, with gym enthusiasts reporting that their penises have been diminishing in size.
Gym-goers have been left scratching their heads and measuring their penises after noticing an unusual side effect of intense workouts, with some claiming their manhood appears to shrink the harder they exercise.
The phenomenon, nicknamed “gym penis”, has prompted men to seek their answers online, with some wondering whether their workouts could actually be affecting their downstairs department.
Doctor explains reason for 'gym penis'
Although “gym penis” is not a medically recognized condition, one doctor has offered an explanation for why men's equipment might appear noticeably smaller after a strenuous session.
Threads discussing the bizarre observation have appeared across social media, with one Reddit user asking: “Why does my d*** get super small in the gym?”
Another user attempted to explain the strange occurrence, writing: “The harder the workout, the smaller (and sometimes stiffer) the flaccid penis will be.”
Now, Dr Giuseppe Aragona, a GP and medical adviser, has explained how a man’s appendage could be impacted when speaking to Metro, revealing that the body's circulation changes during exercise, temporarily prioritizing blood flow to the muscles doing the work.
Combined with changes in body temperature and the contraction of smooth muscles and tissues surrounding the penis, this can make it appear considerably smaller than usual.
Explaining the term itself, he said: “It describes a temporary change in the appearance of the penis after exercise, particularly when someone has been doing strenuous cardiovascular exercise, weight training, or exercising in a cold environment.”
Fortunately for concerned gym-goers, the doctor explained that the effect should not be permanent, although there is no specific amount of time required for everything to return to normal, with the body requiring time to redistribute blood and regulate its temperature.
Aragona explained that most men's penises should return to their usual resting appearance once they have “cooled down, stopped exercising, and their circulation and body temperature returns towards normal.”
For anyone concerned about their temporarily shrinking manhood, the doctor advised allowing the body to recover naturally rather than trying to force things back to normal.
“The best approach is simply to allow the body to recover naturally, so cooling down gradually after exercise and keeping adequately hydrated,” he explained.
“Getting warm if the exercise has taken place in a cold environment may help the penis return to its normal resting appearance more quickly.”
In other words, there's generally no need to panic if things look a little different immediately after an intense workout.
Doctor warns of persistent changes
However, Aragona warned that there are certain symptoms men should never simply dismiss as a consequence of exercise.
While temporary changes in appearance are generally nothing to worry about, persistent or significant penile or testicular pain, numbness, unusual discoloration, swelling, or erectile difficulties should be checked by a medical professional.
“Those features would not be something I would simply put down to exercise without considering other possible causes,” he cautioned.
He added: “And particularly with sudden severe testicular pain or a penis that becomes very painful or markedly discolored, that would warrant prompt assessment rather than waiting for it to settle.”
So, while your post-workout manhood might leave you feeling a little less confident in the changing rooms, the doctor says the temporary phenomenon is generally nothing to worry about.
