A man who survived a horrific workplace accident that resulted in the amputation of his entire lower body has opened up about one of the questions he is most frequently asked.
Loren Schauers was just 19 when he suffered the devastating accident in 2019 while working on a construction site in Montana.
The young worker was operating a forklift when he was thrown from the vehicle and became trapped beneath it.
His injuries were so severe that doctors were ultimately forced to amputate his lower body after he lost blood circulation to his legs.
Loren underwent a hemicorporectomy, an extremely rare procedure involving the removal of the legs, pelvic bones, genitalia, urinary system, anus and rectum.
Part of his right arm was also amputated as a result, so he has since been fitted with a bionic arm.
Since the accident, Loren and his wife Sabia have documented their lives together online, regularly sharing updates and answering questions from their followers.
However, there is one subject that Sabia has previously said she refuses to discuss.
In an interview with the Daily Star four years ago, she explained that people frequently ask the couple about their private life.
“A question we get repeatedly is how do we have sex and how do we become intimate,” she claimed.
“That is a very personal question that we are never going to answer or allude to as it's very disrespectful.”
Sabia added: “You wouldn't ask a random couple on the street how they have sex and just because our life circumstances are different, it doesn't give people the right to ask.”
Another question that regularly comes up concerns how Loren manages everyday bodily functions following his surgery.
During a live Q&A on Instagram, he explained the medical equipment that allows him to use the bathroom.
“[I have] a colostomy which is my colon pulled out of my body so I can poop,” Loren explained.
“And I have bilateral nephrotomies, they're tubes that go into my kidneys that drain my kidneys into bags so, therefore, that is how I poop, pee, and fart.”
Sabia has previously explained that she helps Loren by changing his colostomy bags.
The couple had been together for around 18 months when Loren suffered his life-changing injuries, meaning Sabia was by his side throughout his recovery and rehabilitation.
They eventually married in 2021 and have continued documenting their lives together on social media.
Their YouTube channel has since attracted almost 640,000 subscribers, with the couple regularly sharing their experiences and giving followers an insight into their relationship and life after Loren's accident.
