A couple's unconventional love story has turned heads and stirred whispers among onlookers and virtual passersby alike.

The Finnish step-siblings have candidly opened up about their journey from distant family ties to a deep, impassioned bond that led them down the aisle.

Matilda, 24, and Samuli, 28, who share no blood relation, found themselves in an unexpected whirlwind of emotions following a night that Matilda described as an "accident" which led to the realization of their undeniable attraction.

Speaking on the Truly Series Love Don't Judge, the couple revealed the complexity of their initial dynamic, with Matilda even admitting her initial impression of Samuli was less than favorable, branding him "annoying."

Matila said: "I thought it was kind of wrong, because it felt so weird, and I wasn't expecting it." Samuli added: "It was weird, wrong and fun."

Their love, however, proved strong enough to overcome the "weird" feelings and societal judgment that accompanied the early stages of their relationship. The internet, a notorious battleground for public opinion, hurled negativity their way, with trolls targeting the couple with hurtful comments and unsolicited advice, including assertions that they were "disgusting" and needed "therapy."

Yet, despite the backlash, Matilda and Samuli's connection only strengthened, reinforcing the adage that love knows no bounds.

Navigating their unique situation, the couple's bond continued to flourish, and in July 2022, they exchanged vows near Helsinki, cementing their commitment to each other. The wedding came after a heartfelt engagement in October 2021, with Matilda finding delight in sharing the same last name as her mother, offering a lighthearted twist to their unusual family tree.

Their parents, Tinja and Juha, who initially brought the pair together through their own romance, have been supportive of the relationship. Tinja shared her thoughts on Love Don't Judge, sharing that while the revelation was not entirely unexpected, it was a source of happiness for her.

The couple's narrative is far from typical, igniting conversations about societal norms and the essence of familial bonds. Matilda's reflection on their connection speaks volumes: "If we were siblings by blood then it would definitely be a taboo, but I don't think our situation is, or should be." This sentiment echoes the evolving definitions of family in contemporary society.

Matilda and Samuli's journey from step-siblings to soulmates began innocently at a birthday party in 2018. Despite the platonic nature of their relationship until 2021, they discovered a growing connection through deep conversations and shared moments. It was a kiss initiated by Samuli that steered their relationship into romantic territory, a move both thrilling and daunting, as they feared the potential loss of their friendship.

But love has a way of prevailing in the face of fear and uncertainty. A week after their kiss, unable to suppress the "feelings and affection" burgeoning between them, they took the leap from step-siblings to partners, moving in together shortly after.

The narrative of Matilda and Samuli Eriksson challenges preconceived notions of love and relationship dynamics, demonstrating that even in the face of adversity and judgment, two people can find a way to their own unique happily ever after.
