The cause of death for a US couple found dead in a luxury hotel room in Mexico has been revealed.
John Heathco, 41, and Abby Lutz, 22, were found by first responders on Tuesday night (June 13) in their room at the Hotel Rancho Pescadero, a luxury hotel in El Pescadero, which is about 40 miles north of Cabo San Lucas, per CNN.
The Baja California Sur Attorney General's Office said in a statement via ABC News that Heathco and Lutz had been dead for about 10 or 11 hours when they were found by paramedics.
Their cause of death was listed as "intoxication by substance to be determined," according to the statement. There were no signs of violence on their bodies.
Henar Gil, the hotel's general manager, told People that the Hyatt-owned property is currently assisting local authorities as they investigate the tragic deaths. "We can confirm there was no evidence of violence related to this situation, and we are not aware of any threat to guests' safety or wellbeing. We are truly heartbroken by this terrible tragedy. Our hearts are with the impacted families and loved ones during this unimaginable loss," Gil stated.
Lutz's family told CBS News in a statement: "Abby had an adventurous spirit and a wonderfully kind heart. She loved to travel, see new places, and share her zeal for life with those around her. Abby and her boyfriend thought they had food poisoning and went to the hospital to get treatment."
According to the family, Lutz and Heathco had said that they were feeling much better, before they received a phone call a few days later saying that Lutz and her boyfriend had died in their sleep. Lutz had made plans to meet up with her father on Sunday for Father's Day, a GoFundMe page organized to raise money for funeral transportation costs revealed.
"While on a beautiful trip in Mexico, Abby and her boyfriend thought they had food poisoning and went to the hospital to get treatment. We were told they were feeling much better a few days later. We received a phone call saying that they had passed away peacefully in their hotel room in their sleep. We have been told it was due to improper venting of the resort and could be Carbon monoxide poisoning," the GoFundMe description reads.
There have been a number of gas-related deaths in Mexico over the years, with one of the most recent being the deaths of three Americans who passed away in a Mexico City AirBnb. As previously reported, 28-year-olds Kandace Florence and Jordan Marshall, as well as 33-year-old Courtez Hall tragically died from inhaling fatal levels of carbon monoxide, per an autopsy report acquired by Bloomberg.
