The entertainment world is mourning following the announcement of Hayden Panettiere's death at age 36 on August 16. Known for her roles in Heroes, Remember the Titans, and Nashville, the actress passed away just five days before her 37th birthday.
Police in Greenville, South Carolina, responded to a report of an unresponsive female around 1:50PM local time on August 16. A preliminary investigation indicated no signs of foul play. While her official cause of death has not been released, her father, Skip Panettiere, shared his grief in a public statement.
Panettiere is survived by her parents and her 11-year-old daughter, Kaya Evdokia Klitschko, whom she shared with former fiancé Wladimir Klitschko. She was preceded in death by her younger brother, Jansen, who passed away in 2023 at age 28.
Skip Panettiere, the actress's father, paid tribute to his daughter in an emotional statement, telling People, “It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden.”
“She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her - and to the millions who watched her onscreen,” he continued.
Over the years, Panettiere spoke openly about her experiences with addiction and mental health. In an earlier interview with People, she reflected on her personal journey, noting, "I was on top of the world, and I ruined it. I’d think I hit rock bottom, but then there’s that trap door that opens."
She also shared, "I put a lot of work into myself, and I had to be willing to be incredibly honest. There were a lot of ups and downs, but I don’t regret even the ugliest things that have happened to me."
Earlier in 2026, Panettiere published her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning. During her final interview with the parenting publication Dear Momé, she stated, "I’m a work in progress -we all are. I take each day as it comes. I’m doing the work, and I’m doing my best."
At a May event in Los Angeles promoting her book, she reflected on her purpose, saying, "So many people have come up to me within the industry and outside of the industry and shared their stories with me and said, ‘Because you’ve talked about your mental health, it gave me the courage to be honest about mine and get myself help, and you saved my life.’"
She added, "And I was like, this is worth it. I can hopefully leave the world a better place than I found it. The strength is in our vulnerability."
Friends and colleagues across Hollywood posted messages honoring her life. Her Scream 4 co-star David Arquette commented, "💔 I love you Hayden 🕊️," while Jeremy Renner posted, "Bless you and your family."
Viola Davis shared a photo alongside Panettiere, writing, "What an amazing talent you were…so gifted. Julius and I loved working with you…an old, wise soul with such a deep heart."
Davis added, "I wish the world had more time with you, because I had a burning curiosity about who you were becoming. I saw this beautiful Phoenix rising from the ashes. Your tests became your testimony, and your testimony became your legacy. You will be remembered. Rest well, Hayden. Sending healing prayers to your family, your daughter, and all who loved you. May they always speak your name…♥️🙏🏿🕊"
Other colleagues expressed shock and sorrow. Bethany Joy Lenz wrote, "I’m here with my head in my hands and I don’t know what else to do in aside from praying for her soul, which I have done and will continue. I’m crushed. I don’t understand how this is real. Everything seemed to be turning around. She was coming BACK to life, wasn’t she? It’s too young and there’s still so much more life."
Selma Blair shared, "I love you. Don’t be gone. Don’t be gone. Please. Please. I’m dying. Please be here." Kelly Osbourne also posted, "I am deeply saddened by the loss of someone who meant so much to me. We understood each other in a way few truly can - recognizing how difficult it is to grow up in the spotlight, and how isolating it can feel even when surrounded by so many people."
