Haliey Welch - better known as the “Hawk Tuah Girl” - faced controversy surrounding her involvement in cryptocurrency.
In an attempt to capitalize on her online fame, the 22-year-old social media personality launched her own meme coin, $HAWK, describing the venture as "a good way to interact with [her] fans".
The initial surge in $HAWK's value, reaching a $490 million market cap within hours, quickly turned sour. Within three hours, the coin's value plunged by a shocking 91%, according to CoinTelegraph.
This dramatic crash led to accusations from fans and investors that Welch orchestrated a "rug pull" - a fraudulent scheme in the cryptocurrency world where developers leave a project after raising funds from investors. This leaves them with worthless tokens or NFTs and the developers with the funds they raised.
A lawsuit was filed by investors in the U.S. District Court in New York against the $HAWK creators, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
Filed by investors, it accuses overHere Ltd., its founder, Clinton So, and social media influencer, Alex Larson Schultz, as well as the Tuah The Moon Foundation of unlawfully promoting and selling unregistered cryptocurrency.

Joe Rogan has weighed in and shared his unfiltered and critical opinion on the scandal in a recent episode of his podcast.
"One guy invested a million dollars. Imagine like, 'The Hawk Tuah girl? Yeah, that’s a sound investment," he said. "That seems like a good place to put my nest egg.'"
"It was probably some people she got invested in, and she probably doesn’t understand all that stuff. She’s only 22 or something. It’s probably the partners that went with her. They pumped and dumped on her, and then she was left holding the bill because nobody knows who they are. I’m just guessing. I don’t know," he continued.
It's believed that 12 people have filed a lawsuit against Welch and her team for $151,000. Speaking on this, Rogan added: "Isn't it weird that there's only 12 people and they've only lost $151,000 total? Like, how many cold stone r*****s are there roaming the world?"
