LA Lakers fan is suing LeBron James for hilarious reason after his 'Second Decision' video

LeBron James may have thought his latest viral stunt was clever marketing, but not everyone is laughing.

Following the release of his so-called “Second Decision,” which was ultimately revealed to be an advertisement for Hennessy, one Los Angeles Lakers fan has filed a lawsuit claiming he was deceived by the NBA superstar.

According to court documents, the fan alleges that James misled viewers into thinking he was about to retire, prompting him to spend hundreds of dollars on what he believed would be one of James’ final games in a Lakers uniform.

Fan claims LeBron James “deceived” him out of hundreds

The plaintiff, a self-described lifelong Lakers supporter, says he eagerly watched James’ teaser video, which echoed the style of the star’s iconic 2010 “Decision” special, when he left Cleveland for Miami.

Believing this “Second Decision” would be a major announcement about James’ future, the fan purchased two tickets for the Lakers’ March 31, 2026 matchup against the Cleveland Cavaliers, expecting it to be part of LeBron’s farewell tour.

When the video instead turned out to be a promotional campaign for Hennessy, the fan said he felt “defrauded” and demanded reimbursement for his expenses, totaling $865.66 for the two tickets, Yahoo! writes.

The lawsuit accuses James of “fraud, deception, and misrepresentation,” arguing that the video’s retirement-like setup was deliberately misleading to generate publicity.

LeBron’s Hennessy campaign mimicked his 2010 “decision”

In the ad released Monday, James recreated the dramatic tone and imagery of his infamous ESPN special from 2010; the moment he announced he was "taking [his] talents to South Beach," per ESPN.

This time, however, the punchline wasn’t about basketball.

The video ended by unveiling James’ new partnership with Hennessy, using the hashtag #TheSecondDecision to promote the collaboration.

Many fans initially speculated that the cryptic teaser was leading up to a retirement announcement, especially since James is entering his 23rd NBA season and will turn 41 by the end of his current contract.

LeBron James focused on the season ahead

Despite the backlash from fans (and now, a lawsuit) LeBron James has made it clear he isn’t retiring anytime soon. The four-time NBA champion remains focused on competing for another title with the Lakers.

James will become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2026 season, though he has previously said that his decision to continue playing will depend on “health, joy, and family.”

Neither James nor representatives for Hennessy have publicly commented on the lawsuit.
