The 31-year-old was staying at the Hotel CasaSur in Buenos Aires, Argentina at the time of the incident.

Prior to his sudden passing, the hotel manager had called the authorities regarding an unnamed male guest, expressing concern for the individual's wellbeing.

As they attended the scene, they heard Payne fall into the courtyard of the hotel but were unable to save his life.

Fans have since gathered outside of the hotel to pay tributes to the star, as pictures and candles have been left.

Payne, 31, was known for his role in the globally successful boy band One Direction, which catapulted to fame in 2010 after being formed on The X Factor.

One Direction, composed of Payne, Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan, and Louis Tomlinson, quickly became one of the most popular pop groups in the world.

Their rise to stardom was chronicled in multiple documentaries and concert films, including One Direction: The Only Way Is Up (2012), One Direction: This Is Us (2013), and the concert film One Direction: Where We Are.

Before his death, Payne shared a final Instagram post that paid tribute to acclaimed documentary filmmaker Morgan Spurlock, who had directed This Is Us.

The post featured a photo of Payne and his bandmates posing with Spurlock, along with the caption: "Rest in peace Morgan Spurlock it was a pleasure working with you."

Spurlock, known for his Oscar-nominated 2004 documentary Super Size Me, passed away from cancer in May at the age of 53.

Following the news of Payne's tragic passing, his family released a statement via a spokesperson.

"We are heartbroken. Liam will forever live in our hearts and we'll remember him for his kind, funny and brave soul," they said.

"We are supporting each other the best we can as a family and ask for privacy and space at this awful time."

Alberto Crescenti, head of Argentina's state emergency medical system, has provided additional details regarding the tragic incident.

Speaking to Argentina's Todo Noticias TV channel, Crescenti confirmed that the singer had fallen into a courtyard, and that authorities were investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.

"At 17.04 through the 911 integrated public safety system, we were alerted of a person who was in an internal courtyard of the management of a south house hotel," his statement read, according to The Mirror.

"At 17.11 a SAME team arrived and verified the death of this man and later we found out that he was a singer in a musical group. Unfortunately, he had injuries that were incompatible with life, as a result of his fall, so we had to confirm his death, there was no possibility of resuscitation," he added.
