Tiger Woods speaks out after DUI arrest
Tiger Woods has publicly addressed his recent DUI arrest following a car crash on Jupiter Island, Florida.
The golf icon, aged 50, was involved in a high-speed rollover crash, resulting in charges of driving under the influence, property damage, and refusing to submit to a lawful test.
After being jailed for eight hours, Woods was released on bail.
He later issued a statement confirming that he was "seeking treatment" to prioritize his health.
In his statement posted to his Instagram Story, Woods expressed gratitude for the support he has received and mentioned he would be 'stepping away for a period of time.'
He wrote: "I know and understand the seriousness of the situation I find myself in today.
"I am stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health.
"This is necessary in order for me to prioritize my well-being and work toward lasting recovery."
Woods also requested privacy for himself and his family during this time, stating: "I appreciate your understanding and support, and ask for privacy for my family, loved ones and myself at this time."
The incident occurred when Woods was found standing near his overturned SUV.
Authorities reported that Woods showed signs of impairment, but he refused a urine test.
Despite this, a breathalyzer test showed 'triple zeros,' indicating no alcohol in his system.
According to the sheriff's office, Woods had been driving at a high speed and attempted to overtake a cleaning truck before the crash occurred.
Tiger Woods' history of car accidents
This incident is part of a broader history of car-related issues for Woods.
In 2021, Woods was involved in another serious crash, which left him with severe injuries and the fear that he might lose a leg, The Sun reports.
That crash took place when he lost control of his vehicle, traveling more than 80mph in a 45mph zone.
Additionally, in 2017, Woods was arrested for DUI after being found asleep behind the wheel of his car.
In 2009, he was involved in a crash near his home, colliding with a tree and fire hydrant.
His wife, Elin Nordegren, rescued him from the wreckage by smashing the windows with a golf club.
Support and reactions from public figures
Public figures, including President Donald Trump, have voiced their support for Woods.
Trump, a close friend of Woods, called him an 'amazing person' and expressed his sympathy: “I feel so badly.
"He has got some difficulty. There was an accident.
"That’s all I know. He’s a very close friend of mine. He’s an amazing person – an amazing man.”
Despite these challenges, Woods' supporters remain hopeful for his recovery and eventual return to the sport.
