As Johnny Depp returns to Hollywood, his former spouse Amber Heard has taken a different path, choosing privacy and life abroad.
The Aquaman actress has stayed largely off the radar since the conclusion of her explosive defamation trial with her 61-year-old ex-husband, which played out in the public eye over several years.
The former couple’s highly publicized legal battle began in 2019, after Heard published a 2018 op-ed in The Washington Post in which she claimed to be a survivor of domestic abuse.
Although Depp wasn’t named in the article, he filed a defamation suit against her, arguing the piece falsely implied he had “perpetrated domestic violence against her” - claims he called “categorically and demonstrably false,” according to The Independent.
The 38-year-old actress then countersued for $100 million, further intensifying the media frenzy surrounding the trial.
In 2022, a jury awarded the Pirates of the Carribean star $10.35 million in damages after ruling in favor of his claim, while Heard received $2 million after winning one of her three counterclaims.
Since the trial concluded, The Rum Diary star has taken a completely different path.
Heard quietly moved from a small village in Mallorca - where she had been living under a pseudonym - to Madrid, where she’s now based with her daughter, Oonagh Paige, who was born via surrogate in 2021.
Fluent in Spanish, Heard has been spotted in public on rare occasions. In one TikTok video, she told reporters that she “loves living” in Spain.
A source told PEOPLE in November 2022 that the actress is focused entirely on motherhood. "She is focused on raising her daughter. She spends every day with her girl. They stroll around, visit parks and enjoy family time. Amber is a great mom," they added.
And soon, she’ll be a mom of two as a rep for Heard confirmed to the publication in December that she is expecting her second child.
“It is still quite early in the pregnancy, so you will appreciate that we do not want to go into much detail at this stage,” the rep said. “Suffice to say that Amber is delighted both for herself and Oonagh Paige.”
Meanwhile, Depp is actively re-establishing his film career. He will star in the forthcoming movie Day Drinker, where he plays a mysterious guest aboard a private yacht who crosses paths with a bartender and a criminal figure.
In the first released image, the Edward Scissorhands actor is seen in character wearing a navy suit with a light blue shirt.
His long, grey-streaked hair is tied back, revealing bright blue eyes and a neatly groomed grey beard. He’s also seen wearing a gold ring on his right-hand pinky, adding a dash of mystery to the look.
The flick will have an impressive lineup. Starring alongside Depp are Outer Banks star Madelyn Cline, Penélope Cruz (Ferrari), Manu Ríos and Arón Piper (Elite), Juan Diego Botto (Good Behavior), and Anika Boyle (Made in Caravan).
