Fans have come together to sing one of Sinéad O'Connor's hit tracks as a touching tribute during her funeral procession.

Thousands turned up to line the streets of Bray, Co Wicklow, in Ireland in order to mourn the loss of the singer.

Last week, it was reported that the 56-year-old Irish icon passed away in her home in London on Wednesday (July 26).

As per a heartbreaking statement released by RTE on behalf of the star's family, they said they were "devastated" upon finding out the news.

"It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad. Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time," it read.

Following the statement, the police issued a statement the next day (July 27), which gave further details on the matter.

"Police were called at 11:18 hrs on Wednesday, 26 July to reports of an unresponsive woman at a residential address in the SE24 area," they said. "Officers attended. A 56-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Next of kin have been notified. The death is not being treated as suspicious. A file will be prepared for the Coroner."

While the official cause of death has not yet been released pending an investigation, the star's funeral has gone ahead today (August 8).

As per the Independent, fans took to the streets as the procession passed through along the seafront in the town where O’Connor lived for 15 years, and while some couldn't help but sob at the loss of their idol, others gathered to sing one of the late performer's most notable hits, 'Nothing Compares 2 U.'

A touching tribute indeed.

Speaking during the private service, it was reported that Imam Shaykh Dr Umar Al-Qadri said: "Gifted with a voice that moved a generation of young people, she could reduce listeners to tears by her otherworldly resonance. One need only listen to her a cappella version of ‘Danny Boy’ or the traditional Irish tune ‘Molly Malone’ to know this about her gift. Sinead‘s voice carried with it an undertone of hope, of finding one’s way home."

He continued: "The Irish people have long found solace in song from the sufferings of this lower abode, and Sinead was no exception, and in sharing that solace, she brought joy to countless people the world over."

Elsewhere, the Imam credited O'Connor for her ability to "[bring] diverse souls together through her art, so have you orchestrated a symphony of unity during her final journey. Your noble gesture has transcended boundaries and connected strangers, echoing the very essence of Sinead‘s legacy."

He continued: "In this shared moment of remembrance and prayer, we find ourselves united in a tapestry of love, compassion, and reverence.

"May this ceremony be a testament to the enduring power of humanity’s collective spirit, as we bid farewell to a remarkable soul who touched us all," he added.

Rest in peace to a legend.

Our thoughts are with O'Connor's loved ones during this difficult time.
