In what has been described as a "hard watch", a pair of first cousins decided to announce their relationship in a totally unconventional way and it seems to have left a sour taste in everyone's mouths.

Now, there's no particular way to announce that you're in a relationship, but casually slipping it into a conversation over the dinner table is probably a nice, palatable way to do it.

But what do you do when they know the reaction is not going to be a good one? Certainly not post a make-out photo in a family group chat, right?

Wrong.

Michael Lee and Angela Paeng, who are first cousins from Utah, decided to reveal their newfound relationship via a tongue-on-tongue photo in a family group chat on Facebook, naturally leaving their relatives shocked and disgusted.

The duo appeared on Amazon Prime Video's show Extreme Love, which showcases "a selection of incredible, unusual relationships, where traditional ideas of romance are reimagined."

Branded the 'Kissing Cousins', the show gave us a little look into the intricacies of their life together after the pair reunited at a family gathering and really hit it off.

But it came as no surprise to them as they realized they had a spark early on - and I'm talking really early on - when their parents discovered them slow dancing and then kissing in a closet when they were in second grade.

They were immediately separated and from then on, they didn't cross paths for years.

Both Michael and Angela went on to marry other people, but they soon got divorced which meant that they were both single when they did eventually reunite at a family gathering many years later.

The pair decided to pursue a relationship with each other and settled on telling their family in a pretty cut-throat way.

Taking to the Facebook family group chat, they published a graphic photo in which they were making out, the snapshot showing them touching tongues while smiling at each other.

"They were shocked and horrified," Michael explained on the show.

I mean, can you blame them? A photo of that nature being sent to any family member can be considered uncomfortable, let alone the added layer of them being related.

Despite the backlash, the lovebirds decided to head to Colorado to cement their relationship with vows, as it is illegal for cousins to marry in their native state, before welcoming their son Eric in 2020.

Obviously, viewers were left shocked after witnessing the unique relationship, with many taking to Twitter to express their thoughts on the matter.

"I just knew I was going to see some cousin lovin’ on this show at some point. #extremelove," said this user.

This user added: "#extremelove has to be thee oddest show EVER!"

"As if being cousins wasn’t bad enough. Why do they have to kiss like that?! #extremelove," a third added.

Let's just hope the risk of judgment and potential jail time was worth it for the couple.
