Identity and photos are released of 28-year-old suspect accused of killing Ann Widdecombe
British counter-terrorism police are continuing to question a 28-year-old man arrested in connection with the fatal bludgeoning of former Conservative minister Ann Widdecombe. Authorities initially treated the incident as a botched burglary before upgrading the case to a terrorism investigation.
Per The Daily Mail, the suspect, Joshua Kerry, was arrested by armed officers on the evening of Saturday, July 11, at his council home in Rotherham, South Yorkshire. Detectives believe Widdecombe was killed three days earlier, around 12:30PM on Wednesday, July 8, at her home in Haytor Vale, Devon. Kerry remains in custody under provisions allowing him to be held for questioning until Tuesday.
Background of the suspect
Kerry lived alone in his family home following the death of his father, Paul Yates, a former steel industry research engineer who passed away around Christmas after battling stomach cancer. Raised by his mother Siobhan, a teaching assistant, alongside an older brother and half-brother, Kerry was described by relatives as a gentle child.
An uncle stated via The Daily Mail, "Joshua was such a quiet boy. Gentle and polite. I used to go around when they were all little, and the eldest two used to be playfighting, rolling about on the floor, and Joshua would just be sat in the corner, watching them."
After finishing his schooling, Kerry worked an office job at a local lift company, where he participated in a 2022 charity fundraiser for local sea cadets. However, he stopped working after his father became ill and eventually passed away. Neighbors reported that Kerry was generally polite and helped out by handling packages and taking out trash bins.
The investigation and arrest
Security camera footage from the morning of July 8 showed Kerry leaving his property shortly before 8:00AM carrying what appeared to be a pole in his shorts pocket. Widdecombe, a 78-year-old former member of the European Parliament, made a scheduled television appearance from her Dartmoor home at 8:00AM that morning. She sent her final text message at 12:19PM before failing to log on for a scheduled afternoon appearance on Channel 5 News. Her gardener discovered her body the following morning.
Neighbors in Rotherham noted that Kerry did not leave his home from Wednesday until Saturday evening, when he was seen using his outdoor trash bin. Around 9:00PM that night, approximately 12 police officers raided the house.
Next-door neighbor Courtney Foster, 25, stated, "We saw officers running up. Some were armed. Then they banged on the door very loudly. They asked him his name, he confirmed it and they took him away." Authorities shifted the focus of the investigation after uncovering undisclosed material that suggested a political motivation.
