Viewers of Queen Elizabeth II's funeral have been left baffled after spotting former rugby union player Mike Tindall wearing medals to the event.

The 43-year-old Rugby World Cup winner is part of the Royal Family through his marriage to Zara Tindall, who is the daughter of Anne, Princess Royal, and Captain Mark Phillips.

And, as expected, he was one of the many members of the Royal Family to attend this morning's state funeral service for the late queen at Westminster Abbey.

However, upon his arrival, viewers noticed that the former athlete's jacket was adorned with three medals. The same three medals could be seen when the royal couple paid their respects to the Queen last week in Westminster Hall.

Due to the fact that many members of the Royal family wear medals for military service - such as Prince Harry - and the fact that Tindall has never served in the armed forces, some viewers took to Twitter to voice their confusion.

One viewer asked: "The nerve of Mike Tindall sitting there with medals on, what are they for? Scrums and lineouts?"

A second asked: "Serious question. What are Mike Tindall’s medals for?"

Another Twitter user echoed: "Genuine question. No nastiness intended. I think Mike Tindall is a top bloke. But how come he’s got all those medals?"

And a fourth tweeted: "I think one of the photos I've seen on Twitter is that of Zara and Mike Tindall and he's got loads of medals on. So I googled to see about his time in whatever military services and couldn't find any!"

However, the former rugby player's medals have a perfectly reasonable explanation.

First, his cross-shaped medal is due to the fact that Tindall was honored as a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) back in 2007 for his contribution to rugby.

The other two medals were also gifts from Her Majesty the Queen herself.

The two commemorative medals were designed for the late queen's Diamond and Platinum Jubilees, and were given to members of the Royal Family.

The same medals also sparked confusion among viewers when they were seen on the jacket of the Queen's 14-year-old grandson, James, Viscount Severn.

Like with previous Jubilee celebrations, these medals were also awarded to members of the armed services and emergency services who were eligible (often down to time served).
