Five children were rescued from horrifying conditions inside a Pennsylvania home, where authorities say they were locked in a filthy room described as a “dungeon.” Their parents are now facing multiple charges, including child endangerment and assault.

Children discovered in deplorable conditions

James Russell Kahl, 65, and Carly Kahl, 41, were arrested Wednesday after investigators uncovered the disturbing scene at their Redstone Township residence.

According to Pennsylvania State Police, the children (ranging in age from five to 14) were allegedly confined to a bedroom with boarded-up windows, walls smeared with feces, flea infestations, and little access to clothing or food, CBS News reports.

“There were no beds, no proper care. It’s sickening, that’s the only word I can use to describe what we saw and what those children went through,” Trooper Ally Wilson told reporters.

Video footage showed both parents being led away in handcuffs, with neighbors visibly shocked by the discovery.

Locked 'dungeon' with cameras installed

Authorities first responded to the home on August 8 following a complaint to Fayette County Children and Youth Services (CYS). After securing a search warrant, state police found evidence that the children were routinely locked inside the room overnight and for large portions of the day.

Investigators say the door had three deadbolt locks on the outside and no handle on the inside, effectively trapping the children. Surveillance cameras were hardwired to the father’s bedroom, allowing the parents to monitor them remotely, WTAE details.

Police also discovered a stun gun, a replica pistol, and drug paraphernalia in the home.

A criminal complaint states that James Kahl admitted he would “not be removing the locks from the bedroom door for any reason," according to WPXI.

Children report abuse and neglect

Interviews with the children revealed further disturbing allegations. They told investigators that James frequently smoked marijuana throughout the day and neglected their care. They also claimed Carly was once ordered to use a stun gun on one of them as punishment.

The children have since been removed from the home and placed under the care of CYS.

Officials condemn abuse

“This is going to be a long process for these children to recover,” Fayette County District Attorney Mike Aubele said. “I can’t imagine living in a household like what we saw.”

Aubele praised the family member who came forward with concerns, saying their report may have saved the children from further harm.

Both parents are being held without bail on charges including child endangerment, aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, and drug possession.

“I’m hoping these parents go to jail and answer for what they’ve done,” Trooper Wilson said.

The investigation remains ongoing.

When deputies arrived at David and Louise Turpin's house in Perris, California, they discovered a horrific scene. Thirteen children, ranging in age from 2 to 29, were found held captive and severely malnourished. One 22-year-old son was shackled to a bed, and one 29-year-old daughter weighed 82 pounds. The house was filthy, and reeked of human waste.

The deputies testified that all the children aside from the toddler suffered years of abuse, torture and imprisonment: They were only allowed one meal per day. They were only allowed to shower once a year. They never saw a doctor or a dentist. They weren't allowed to play. They lived in isolation without ever leaving the home, save for an occasional family trip to Disneyland or Vegas. They were forced to sleep during the day, and stay up all night. If they didn't obey their parents, they were beaten, caged or shackled to beds.

The abuse was so severe that it stunted the children's growth and left two girls unable to bear children, according to court testimony. What's more, all 13 children had diminished mental capacity, according to a source close to the investigation. Although the Turpins filed paperwork with California to homeschool their kids, their education was minimal at best. "We don't really do school. I haven't finished first grade," the 17-year-old said, according to Deputy Manuel Campos, per CBS News.

Deputies discovered the shocking "house of horrors" in January 2018, after a 17-year-old girl leapt out the window. She did not know the date, or the month, or what 'medication,' meant, but she did know how to dial 911 on a barely functional cell phone, and reported the abuse to a police dispatcher. After authorities arrived, they called for medical assistance and arrested the California couple. The children were hospitalized and then split up into foster care.

In February 2019, David Turpin, 57, and Louise Turpin, 50, pleaded guilty in Riverside County Superior Court to 14 felony counts, including "cruelty to an adult dependent, child cruelty, torture and false imprisonment." Their house in Perris, pictured below, was kept neat from the outside, giving neighbors no indication of the horrors within. (Perris is a city with an estimated population of 77,000, located about 70 miles east of Los Angeles and 80 miles north of San Diego.)

"My parents took my whole life from me, but now I'm taking my life back," said one girl who described living independently and attending college, per CBS News. "Life may have been bad but it made me strong. I fought to become the person that I am. I saw my dad change my mom. They almost changed me, but I realized what was happening. ... I'm a fighter, I'm strong and I'm shooting through life like a rocket."

Another sibling said he's studying to be a software engineer, and surprisingly, forgave his parents for "a lot of the things that they did to us." However, he still struggles emotionally. "I cannot describe in words what we went through growing up," he said. "Sometimes, I still have nightmares of things that had happened to us, such as my siblings being chained up or getting beaten. But that is the past, and this is now."

Some of the other Turpin children agree, and say they still love their parents. One requested a lighter sentence for them because "they believed everything they did was to protect us." In addition, she asked for them to be incarcerated in a nearby prison, so she could visit them more easily. "I believe our parents feared if they asked for help, they would lose their children," she said in her statement.

In court, Louise Turpin apologized for hurting her children, and broke down crying. "I'm sorry for everything I've done to hurt my children," she said. "I love my children so much. ... I only want the best for them... [I look] forward to the day I can see them and hug them and tell them I'm sorry."

David Turpin gave a similar statement, and was so emotional his attorney had to read a portion of it. "I never intended for any harm to come to my children," the statement said. "I'm sorry if I've done anything to cause them harm. I'm glad we were able to resolve this case without my children being forced to testify." When David Turpin recovered enough to speak, he said he hoped his children succeeded in school and in their careers.

Judge Bernard Schwartz admonished the couple for their "selfish, cruel and inhumane actions," the sentenced them to 25 years to life in prison. "The only reason your punishment is less than the maximum, in my opinion, is because you accepted responsibility at an early stage of the proceedings and spared the children from having to relive the humiliation and harm they endured in that house of horrors," Schwartz said.

"The defendants ruined lives, so I think it's just and fair that the sentence be equivalent to first-degree murder," said District Attorney Mike Hestrin at the time of the guilty plea.

Two children from Cleveland, Ohio, aged 9 and 10, have been charged with several serious crimes after allegedly attacking a 5-year-old girl. The charges include attempted murder, rape, felonious assault, kidnapping, and strangulation.

These charges were filed after the victim, found in a field near her home, showed signs of severe physical trauma.

The Cuyahoga County Prosecutor's Office has confirmed that the two juveniles will be arraigned at a later date.

Details of the alleged assault

According to police, the 5-year-old girl went missing after being taken by a group of children. She was later found in a fetal position in a field near her home, her clothing discarded nearby.

Witnesses reported seeing the children take her to the location where she was attacked. Video footage, including Ring camera footage, was later recovered, further supporting the claims.

The victim's mother, Antavia Kennibrew, spoke publicly about the traumatic effect the assault has had on her daughter.

She described the injuries her daughter sustained, noting that her child was "unrecognizable" when she first saw her. "Her hair was scalped from her head. She had bruises and blood all over her body. Her eyes were filled with blood. Her lips and mouth were filled with blood," Kennibrew said.

Kennibrew, revealed to 3News that her daughter has "been affected mentally and physically by what was done with her, so just seeing how much she changed is hard." She added, "What was done to her was inhumane, so it made me think like there was no more human decency left."

Speaking to Cleveland 19, she went on to say: "What I saw was unbelievable," she continued. "My daughter was not my daughter. Her hair was scalped from her head. She had bruises and blood all over her body. Her eyes were filled with blood. Her lips and mouth were filled with blood. Her nails had debris and dirt in it."

Kennibrew shared more details on Facebook (in a post that has since been removed), writing: "My daughter is completely traumatized. I am completely traumatized. These kids broke my daughter's spirit. They literally tried to kill my daughter."

She also revealed her daughter is now in therapy, adding, "I want her to be somewhat of a normal five-year-old again."

Victim's recovery and ongoing investigation

Since the attack, the young girl has been hospitalized and is currently receiving therapy. Kennibrew expressed her desire for her daughter to regain some normalcy.

"I want her to be somewhat of a normal five-year-old again," she said. The Cleveland Police Department is continuing the investigation into the assault, although they have not released further details to protect the privacy of those involved.

The case has sparked concern about juvenile offenses and the impact such violent acts can have on both victims and communities. As the investigation continues, the community remains focused on supporting the victim and seeking justice for the horrifying attack.

A couple from North Carolina has been arrested and charged with murder after their adopted toddler son passed away from an alleged series of "exorcisms".

As reported by NBC News, the Surry County Sheriff’s Office said the police received a call on January 6 from Child Protective Services about a child who had been rushed to the hospital after suffering from a "medical emergency" the previous day.

The child in question was four-year-old Skyler Wilson and he tragically died on January 9 "from injuries related to the abuse sustained by his parents," authorities said, per the outlet.

On January 13, parents Joseph Wilson, 41, and Jodi Wilson, 38, were taken into custody and are now being held at the Surry County Detention Center under no bond for the alleged abuse they inflicted on the boy, according to a press release from the police.

"This is a tragic event that resulted in the death of a precious child way too soon," Sheriff Steve C. Hiatt said in his statement. "Please remember the other siblings involved in this situation as well as the investigators who worked tirelessly on this case in your thoughts and prayers."

The sheriff's office has revealed that the Wilsons have two biological children and were foster parents to two other children. The children have now been sent to the Department of Social Services, as noted by Mount Airy News.

According to People, documents disclosed that the father allegedly received a text message from his wife about how she was having trouble with "swaddling" Skyler.

She allegedly also sent a picture of the toddler "wrapped in a sheet or a blanket face-down on the Wilsons' living room floor with duct tape attaching him to the floor".

This prompted Joseph to call 911 to report that Skyler was having a seizure, however, an investigator reportedly heard a female voice in the background exclaim "It's my fault," per the warrants obtained by WFMY.

In addition to this, the publication shared that a former foster parent of the boy and his brother revealed to law enforcement that a month before his tragic death, she filed a report with the Department of Social Services after being worried for their wellbeing.

Furthermore, the former foster parent claimed that Jodi told her about allegedly restricting the boys' food, isolating them, and performing "exorcisms" which alarmed her.

The police searched the pair's home after their arrest and reportedly discovered turned-up wrist and ankle restraints as well as digital footage that apparently recorded the shocking abuse.

The bonds were allegedly used to control the boy during a "swaddling" technique Jodi discovered from Nancy Thomas - who is a "professional therapeutic parent" - according to Fox8.

Speaking to the outlet, Skyler's former foster mother described him as a loving social butterfly, saying: "He was so tiny and small but had a heart three times bigger than he was." She added: "I want to love unconditionally and remember his smile and the little things."

The Wilsons will appear in court on February 2. It has not been stated if they have obtained an attorney.
