New footage appears to show moment Air Canada plane collides with fire truck at LaGuardia Airport
Horrific footage has emerged that appears to show the moment an Air Canada Express plane collided with a fire truck at New York's LaGuardia Airport.
Two people - believed to be the pilot and co-pilot of the plane - were killed in the incident.
Tragedy at LaGuardia Airport as Air Canada plane and fire truck collide
The tragedy occurred last night (March 22) at around 11:40pm when an Air Canada Express plane - operated by Jazz Air - crashed into a fire truck as it landed on Runway 4 at LaGuardia Airport in New York.
There appears to have been a miscommunication between air traffic controllers and those in the fire truck and aircraft that could be the root cause of the incident.
Since the crash, chilling audio has emerged that details a conversation between the air traffic team and those on the ground, and seems to show that the fire truck was given clearance to cross the runway before being asked repeatedly to stop as the controller realized that a plane was approaching.
After the incident, a heartbreaking exchange took place between the radio operator and another pilot who witnessed the incident. The air traffic controller could be heard to say: “I messed up.”
Footage has emerged that allegedly shows the crash
Now, footage has begun to circulate online that allegedly shows the moment of the crash.
In the short video, filmed from a CCTV monitor, a plane can be seen landing at great speed and crashing into a vehicle crossing the runway.
The short clip ends as the plane and truck collide and are pushed out of screen.
The veracity of the video has yet to be confirmed.
The fire truck had allegedly been dispatched to investigate reports of an ‘odor’ in the cockpit of another plane, as well as flight attendants feeling unwell.
After the crash, a statement from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said: "At approximately 11.40pm on Sunday, a Jazz Aviation flight operating on behalf of Air Canada was involved in an incident on Runway 4 at LaGuardia airport in which the aircraft struck a Port Authority Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting vehicle that was responding to a separate incident.”
A separate statement from the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) confirmed that an investigation will take place into the circumstances that led to the tragedy.
Officials said: "The NTSB is launching a go team to investigate the March 22 incident involving Jazz Aviation, Air Canada Express Flight 8646, a CRJ-900, that collided with a fire truck on Runway 4 at LaGuardia Airport in New York, NY. Chair Jennifer Homendy will serve as the on-scene spokesperson, accompanied by Member John DeLeeuw.
“The investigative team is expected to arrive today.”
