New documentary 'uncovers the truth' about Bigfoot
Bigfoot may well be one of the most popular US urban legends in existence, but a new documentary has claimed to have figured it all out.
The footage in question is well-known, with the decades-old video showing a shaky hand recording in the woods.
Then, a gorilla-like creature enters the frame, walking like a human in the wilderness of Northern California.
Tomorrow will mark exactly 59 years of that footage being released (October 20, 1967), and it has since been used as the basis of the myth of Bigfoot.
Unsurprisingly, many have remained skeptical about the prospect of there being some kind of man-gorilla creature living in the American wild, though there has been no substantial proof to debunk the video, which was captured by Robert Patterson.
New documentary 'disproves' Bigfoot myth
Directed by Marq Evans, the long-form documentary Capturing Bigfoot explores the origins of the myth, even opening with the infamous footage from 1967.
Stories about humanoid creatures have been spread throughout human history, with many Americans becoming believers in Bigfoot after myths of the Himalayan Yeti first surfaced.
Patterson was more focused on the American version of the creature, also known as Sasquatch in British Columbia, for which tales have circulated for years before his footage was captured.
The Bigfoot believer's footage first aired on TV, and then in theaters as part of a 'tour', though it was thought to be too detailed.
It claimed that Bigfoot was actually female and was thought to be too realistic, but the new documentary explains how the video was fabricated.
That's right, it was all fake.
Apparently, footage of a supposed rehearsal was discovered.
'Rehearsal' footage was found
Patterson was considered an eccentric man who hailed from Yakima, Washington, and enjoyed riding in rodeos and taking his horses for camping trips.
But with his Bigfoot footage, he managed to make what would be millions today.
In this new documentary, a never-before-seen film is aired, which was shot the year before the humanoid creature was introduced to the public.
It appears as a kind of rehearsal, as a friend of Patterson's can be seen walking not too dissimilarly to Bigfoot himself in the infamous footage.
So with footage of the humanoid creature now confirmed to be fake, you'd expect people to move on - but you would be wrong.
People still believe in Sasquatch, with the belief bigger than anything Patterson could have imagined, with many claiming to spot Bigfoot to this day.
Many in the Pacific Northwest have bought into the idea, despite most of the alleged sightings likely being bears or similar animals.
Capturing Bigfoot will be made available for rent on Amazon Prime Video on October 20, the 59th anniversary of the footage.
