Since posting a heartfelt video on his mom’s Facebook page, a teenager fighting stage four cancer has been granted access to potentially lifesaving treatment after flying from his home in Alabama to California.
Will Roberts, 15, uploaded a desperate plea calling on anyone who could help him contact lawmakers and officials who might be able to bring a new experimental drug to his small southern hometown.
In the video, he explained, “I have osteosarcoma for the last 16 months.
“It's a very, very, very deadly and hard-to-treat bone cancer.
“My chemos are just not working and I've been fighting it for a bit now.
“I've tried basically everything there is and we're getting toward the end of the road and I need help.”
Roberts also said his mom was having “sleepless, sleepless, sleepless nights”, as she lay awake for hours reading up on treatments and emailing senators, congressmen, and even the National Institutes of Health.
Thankfully, her hard work seems to be paying off, as Roberts claims his mom has “found this drug that could possibly save my life if we get it in time.”
According to the National Library of Medicine, the drug DeltaRex-G has led to “long-term survivorship” of 10 years or more for some patients with complicated cancers.
In the video, which quickly went viral after it was posted on April 22, Roberts said: “I want my life, just as anybody does, but even if this won't work out for me, if this drug can get out in the future, I mean, it'll help hundreds of other kids.
“I really want it to get out in time for it to help me, too.”
The brave teen then asked anyone who saw the video to share it with President Donald Trump or Robert F Kennedy, the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
Allegedly, Alabama businessman Ric Meyers, a member of Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort, saw the post and forwarded it to the president.
It has since been reported that Robert F Kennedy Jr, First Lady Melania Trump, and Barron Trump have all seen Roberts’ message.
The family received a call from the President's spokesperson telling them Donald Trump would like to meet the courageous 15-year-old.
Roberts is now set to begin receiving treatment at a California clinic, but it will cost the family $500,000, after Roberts' mother, Brittney, claims they have already spent $100,000 on medical expenses, travel, and hotels.
The GoFundMe page set up to help the family cover the costs has already raised over $653,00.
The selfless 15-year-old said he wants to work to ensure paediatric cancer patients receive any drugs that could help, delivered to their hometowns at a reasonable price.
Roberts told AL.com, “I may not survive bone cancer. It might be too late.
“But if I can help other children have future access to proper cancer drugs without flying all over the world to get them, I've done my job.”
