Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of Today Show host Savannah Guthrie, has been missing since last weekend, sparking an intense investigation by authorities.
Her disappearance, which occurred from her $1 million home in Tucson, Arizona, has raised serious concerns as law enforcement believes she was taken against her will.
New developments, including suspicious activity related to her doorbell camera, have led to theories about what might have transpired, as reported by The Daily Mail.
Disconnected Doorbell Camera Raises Alarm
NBC's National Law Enforcement and Intelligence Correspondent, Tom Winter, has highlighted a key moment in Nancy Guthrie's case involving her doorbell camera.
According to Winter, her kidnapper disconnected the camera at 1:47AM on Sunday, potentially testing whether this action would prompt a response from police.
“What's with that 20-minute time gap?” Winter questioned during a segment on the Today Show.
“The camera gets ripped off the doorbell, but then there's motion seen on the camera outside, you know, 20 minutes later. What's that about?”
This unsettling detail suggests that the person responsible may have been waiting to see if police would arrive after disabling the camera.
It appears the kidnapper disconnected the device in a calculated move to avoid detection.
After the camera was disabled, movement was detected at 2:12AM, but law enforcement has not been able to confirm whether it was a person or an animal.
Sadly, because Nancy Guthrie did not have an active subscription with the doorbell app, the company could not retrieve any footage to further aid the investigation.
Theories Around Disconnection of the Pacemaker App
Winter also drew attention to the timing surrounding the disconnection of Guthrie's pacemaker app from her phone at 2:28AM.
The move suggests that she was no longer at her home and may have been separated from her phone before that time.
“There’s speculation among investigators that her abductor took the doorbell camera off and waited to see if police arrived,” Winter said. "And then perhaps thinking the coast was clear, goes back to the house. We don’t know."
Savannah Guthrie's Heartfelt Plea
The disappearance of her mother has been devastating for Savannah Guthrie. For the fifth consecutive day, the Today Show opened its broadcast with coverage of Nancy’s abduction.
Savannah has taken a leave of absence from work, including stepping down from hosting NBC’s coverage of the Milan Winter Olympics, which begins on Friday.
In an emotional social media post, Savannah and her two siblings made a direct plea to the abductor: “We need to know without a doubt that she is alive and that you have her. We want to hear from you and we are ready to listen. Please reach out to us,” she said, fighting back tears.
Flanked by her brother Camron and their sister Annie, Savannah addressed her mother directly, holding onto hope. “Mamma, if you're listening, we need you to come home. We miss you,” Annie added, her voice filled with emotion.
A Desperate Search for Answers
Nancy Guthrie was reported missing on Sunday after she failed to show up at a local church.
While she is mentally sharp and able to drive, she has difficulty walking short distances and requires daily medication for high blood pressure, heart issues, and a pacemaker.
Authorities have confirmed that she needs this medication to maintain her health.
As the search enters its sixth day, law enforcement has yet to identify any suspects or persons of interest. However, new forensic findings have added urgency to the investigation.
DNA tests revealed that blood found on Guthrie's front porch matched her own, indicating a possible violent struggle at her home.
Sheriff Chris Nanos of Pima County stated: "Right now, we believe Nancy is still out there. We want her home." However, he added: “We have no evidence she’s okay,” which has only increased concerns about her well-being.
