Florida girlfriend accused of tracking down 'cheating boyfriend' and shooting another woman to 'make a point'
A Florida woman is behind bars after police say she tracked down her boyfriend and opened fire on a vehicle containing him and another woman.
Authorities reported that the suspect tracked her partner after he took her car to meet up with someone else, ultimately shooting the female passenger with a distinctive firearm.
Katherine Kelly, a 25-year-old resident of Cocoa, had grown suspicious that her partner, Elijah Baker, was being unfaithful. According to a police report obtained by local outlet Space Coast Daily, Kelly sent text messages to Baker confronting him about her suspicions prior to the incident. In those exchanges, she also issued threats that she was going to shoot someone.
Her anger mounted late Friday evening when Baker drove off in her Volkswagen. Refusing to let the situation go, Kelly tracked her vehicle's location and hired an Uber to follow him to nearby Port St. John.
When she arrived at the parked car, her worst fears were confirmed as she found Baker sitting inside with another woman, identified in law enforcement records as Angel Adenau.
A late-night confrontation ends in gunfire
Upon locating her car, Kelly approached the vehicle armed with a pink-and-black Glock handgun. She fired directly into the passenger side of the automobile, striking Adenau in the shoulder.
Police officials have not released detailed medical updates on the severity of the victim's injuries.
The sudden burst of violence led to immediate police intervention. Investigators quickly located Kelly and took her into custody for questioning regarding the shooting.
When detectives first began interviewing her, Kelly attempted to defend her actions by claiming that she had opened fire in self-defense during the encounter.
The suspect admits shooting to send a message
Investigators poked holes in that initial story as the interview progressed. According to police records, Kelly eventually dropped her self-defense justification and admitted that she pulled the trigger because she wanted to "make a point" regarding her boyfriend's infidelity.
That admission solidified severe criminal accusations against her. Kelly has been charged with attempted first-degree murder, an offense that carries a maximum penalty of up to 30 years in prison under Florida law.
In addition to the primary attempted murder count, inmate records confirm that Kelly faces charges of aggravated battery with a weapon and shooting into an occupied vehicle.
She remains detained in Brevard County as the legal case against her moves forward through the court system.
