A Florida woman has been charged with sexual activity involving animals after her estranged husband said he found home-security footage showing her allegedly having sex with the family dog, according to the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office.
On Sept. 11, Erik Nummerdor posted publicly on Facebook accusing his estranged wife, Malia Nummerdor, of engaging in sexual activity with their dog, according to Malia’s arrest affidavit obtained by PEOPLE.
A sheriff’s detective later reviewed Erik’s posts and comment threads, which the affidavit says included his claims that he had discovered Malia having sex with the dog inside their home and that he had photos and video documenting it.
Erik told investigators he had installed two surveillance cameras in the residence, including one in his bedroom, to find out who was taking money from a coin container.
He also claimed that the bedroom camera was visible, had a blinking red light, and was known to people in the household. While reviewing recordings, he says he found a video showing his wife engaging in sexual conduct with the family dog, Ranger, and he provided authorities with screenshots.
A detective wrote in the affidavit: “I reviewed the images and observed an adult female, identified by Erik as Malia, nude from the waist down, positioned with the dog in a manner consistent with sexual activity.”
Erik gave the sheriff’s office full access to a laptop containing the surveillance files. According to the affidavit, Erik said Malia denied engaging in sexual conduct and claimed the images did not depict a dog, though he maintained the video clearly showed Malia and Ranger the dog.
On Tuesday, Sept. 15, authorities questioned 38-year-old Malia about the footage. The affidavit alleges she appeared impaired and acknowledged she was under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol.
She reviewed the video depicting the alleged conduct and confirmed she was the person in the room and that the dog was hers, according to the affidavit.
The sheriff’s office said in a statement on Wednesday that Malia denied anything sexual occurred “but could not provide a consistent explanation for what was seen on the camera.” Malia claimed Erik had installed cameras without her knowledge and had accessed her social-media accounts to post images and videos, per the affidavit.
She also claimed that the recordings were made in 2024 and that Erik had previously threatened her with the videos. Calls to a number listed for Erik were not immediately returned.
Malia was arrested in Port Charlotte on charges of sexual activity involving animals, a second-degree felony under Florida law. She remains at the Charlotte County Jail with a bond amount of $35,000.
Since her arrest, Malia’s Facebook page has attracted increased scrutiny, with cryptic posts appearing on her profile, including a picture with the words: “Be gentle with who you are right now. You have worked so, so hard to become this version of yourself. Cheer yourself on and don’t give up. You’re doing the best you can. Let that be enough.”
That cryptic message has drawn criticism, particularly in the comments section, with one Facebook user saying, “And violate dogs?”
Sheriff Bill Prummell condemned the alleged behavior in a statement Wednesday, saying no animal should be subjected to such conduct. “There are only a few times in my career that I have been at a loss for words,” he said. “This is one of those times. I simply cannot comprehend this behavior.”
“And then to smile in the mugshot?” he continued. “I don’t know what there is to smile about when you’ve been arrested for something as disgusting as this.”
