Joe Biden has taken to Twitter to post his first tweet on Inauguration Day.

Writing to his 24.5 million followers on the platform, he declared: "It's a new day in America".

The tweet comes after Donald Trump left the White House as President for the very last time earlier today.

Trump, who became the only President in history to be impeached twice following the Capitol riots that left five people dead, has previously confirmed that he will not be attending Joe Biden's inauguration, which is tradition.

Prior to his permanent ban from the platform, Trump took to Twitter to write: "To all of those who have asked, I will not be going to the Inauguration on January 20th."

And yesterday (January 19th), Trump issued a prerecorded farewell speech in which he asserted that his administration has done what it set out to do and more.

He said: "We proudly leave the next administration with the strongest and most robust border security measures ever put into place… with more than 450 miles of [a] powerful new wall."

"I am especially proud to be the first president in decades who has started no new wars," Trump added.

Meanwhile, Vice President Mike Pence took to Twitter to issue a farewell after his tenure in the White House.

Sharing a series of pictures from his time in office, he wrote: "Thank you for the privilege of serving as your Vice President these past four years, it has been the greatest honor of my life. On behalf of our Wonderful Second Lady, Karen Pence, and our entire Family, Thank You and God Bless America."

Incoming President Joe Biden is to be sworn in as President of the United States today, while Vice President-elect Kamala Harris will take the oath of office alongside him in Washington DC.

Biden has released a statement confirming everything that he will do on his first day in office.

As per the Mirror, a statement from Biden's office ahead of his swearing-in today reads: "Today, hours after taking the oath of office, President-elect Biden will take a historic number of actions to deliver immediate relief for families across America that are struggling in the face of converging crises.

"He will sign a combination of executive orders, memoranda, directives, and letters to take initial steps to address these crises, including by changing the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, providing economic relief, tackling climate change, and advancing racial equity."

Biden's office continued: "Today, President-elect Biden is launching his '100 Days Masking Challenge,' asking the American people to do their part - their patriotic duty - and mask up for 100 days.

'The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has found that masks "are a critical tool in the fight against COVID-19 that could reduce the spread of the disease".

Biden also has plans to tackle climate change, which will mean rejoining the Paris Agreement and undoing Trump's previous actions.

Furthermore, the 78-year-old intends to tackle racial inequality, providing support to those in need.

The President Elect's statement continued:

"The president-elect’s equity agenda is grounded in advancing racial justice and building back better for communities who have been underserved, including people of color and Americans with disabilities, LGBTQ+ Americans, religious minorities, and rural and urban communities facing persistent poverty."

Biden also plans to reverse Trump's Muslim ban and his policy to exclude undocumented immigrants from the country's census.
