President Donald Trump has reappeared at the White House after seven days without a public appearance, but it wasn't just his return that caught people's attention.
The 79-year-old appeared in the Oval Office on Wednesday (June 3), ending a week-long stretch in which he had not participated in any public events.
The absence had already led to discussion on the internet, with online users questioning why a president known for holding a high public profile had seemingly disappeared from public view.
But as Trump addressed reporters, some viewers became fixated on what they believed was an attempt to hide his right hand.
During the appearance, Trump showed members of the press a graphic comparing the size of the Lincoln Reflecting Pool.
One social media user claimed the president is keeping that right hand "covered up pretty good," during his address.
Another also stated: "He has his right hand strategically covering his left hand and seems to look down to make sure he has it adequately covered from view of cameras/press."
The moment added fuel to ongoing online speculation surrounding Trump's health, which has intensified in recent days as his 80th birthday on June 14 approaches.
Independent journalist Aaron Rupar was among those commenting on the president's appearance.
"Trump, who is currently doing a proof of life appearance in the Oval after a week of not being seen in public, sounds extremely tired and haggard," Rupar wrote on X.
In a separate post sharing footage from the event, he added: "Folks, there is something gravely wrong with the president’s health and the White House is covering it up. This man is obviously not well."
Questions about Trump's well-being had been mounting throughout his week-long absence.
According to reports, Trump had not been seen publicly since attending a Cabinet meeting on May 27. Since then, the only appearance he has had was a pre-recorded interview.
Concern grew after Rupar highlighted the absence on social media, with some users claiming they had noticed a recurring pattern in the president's schedule.
"Call me old-fashioned, but I think it should be a bigger story that we haven't seen the President of the United States on live TV in nearly a week. This happens at the beginning of every single month...," one person wrote.
Another said: "I didn't notice a possible pattern until someone pointed it out. It's the first of the month. He seems to disappear around this time."
Others were similarly baffled by the lack of public appearances. "I know we're all a little weary of 'dementia Twitter,' but it does seem odd that a president who lives on camera just doesn't do any public appearances about once a month for almost a week," a user commented.
The speculation intensified following reports that the 79-year-old spent several hours at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center the day before his May 27 Cabinet meeting. Per reports, it was his third visit to the facility within the past year.
That development led to more discussion online, particularly surrounding conversations about bruising visible on Trump's hands.
"It's the first of the month, time for his monthly treatments. Expect to see large bruises on his hands and open sores on other parts of his body in the next few days," a user remarked.
Another claimed: "They are lying to us about Donald Trump's health."
Despite the speculation, Trump recently insisted there was no cause for concern.
Last week, he said a recent six-month medical examination at Walter Reed found that "everything checked out PERFECTLY."
The White House later released the results of his third official medical assessment since returning to office.
In a memorandum published on Friday, US Navy Captain Sean Barbabella wrote that the president "remains in excellent health" and possesses "strong cardiac, pulmonary, neurological, and overall physical function," per The Guardian.
