The incident unfolded on Tuesday (April 8), when California Highway Patrol officers responded to a multi-car hit-and-run on the 134 Freeway in Eagle Rock. The crash led to a frantic manhunt after three suspects fled the scene on foot.
As officers scoured the neighborhood for the suspects, they encountered a woman standing outside her home on Eagle Vista Drive, armed with a handgun. That woman was 51-year-old Jillian Shriner.
According to LAPD Director of Communications Jennifer Forkish, officers ordered Jillian “numerous times” to drop the weapon, per TMZ. She allegedly refused and even pointed the gun at officers.
“Our investigation revealed evidence such as a shell casing and video footage showing she repeatedly ignored police commands to disarm and that she fired her weapon at LAPD officers,” Forkish told NBC News.
In response, an officer opened fire, striking the author in the shoulder. Despite being shot, she reportedly retreated into the home before eventually surrendering with the family’s babysitter.
Both women were seen on aerial footage with their hands raised, walking down the driveway before being ordered to the ground and handcuffed.
A young boy was later seen exiting the home with his hands in the air.

Paramedics transported Jillian to a local hospital, where she was treated for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. A 9mm handgun was recovered from the residence, according to authorities.
The writer has since been booked for attempted murder. Both she and the babysitter were released from custody, with Jillian reportedly posting a $1 million bond, according to NBC New York.
Despite the surreal turn of events, Scott Shriner, who married Jillian in 2005, offered a brief update on his wife’s condition while speaking to reporters outside their home on Thursday, April 10.
“She’s alright; thank you for asking,” the 59-year-old said. He then pivoted to promote Weezer’s upcoming show, adding, “See you at Coachella," cited by The Mirror.
Meanwhile, police eventually caught up with one of the suspects involved in the original hit-and-run near the intersection of Waldo Place and Eagle Vista Drive.
He was allegedly pretending to be a resident at a home in the area when he was arrested. CBS News reports he is expected to face felony hit-and-run charges.
The case remains under active investigation as authorities continue to piece together the bizarre chain of events.
