Police in Georgia have sparked a fierce online debate after asking the public to help identify a man who allegedly picked up $30 that another shopper had dropped inside a Walmart.
The Albany Police Department shared an image of the unidentified man on social media, saying he had found the cash on the floor of the store.
The incident reportedly happened at the Walmart at 2586 N. Slappey Blvd after a shopper accidentally dropped the cash while inside the store.
Another customer allegedly spotted the money, picked it up, and left without reporting finding it to Walmart staff.
The person who lost the cash subsequently contacted the police, leading to the public appeal for information.
The department subsequently appealed to the public for information that could help identify him.
"The Albany Police Department would like the public's assistance with identifying the suspect in the photo," they wrote in a post. "The incident occurred at 2586 N. Slappey Blvd. (Walmart). An individual dropped $30.00 on the ground while shopping. This individual picked up the money and did not turn it in to the employees."
"Anyone with information that may assist with identifying this individual is asked to contact the Albany Police Department at 229-431-2100," they added.
But the post quickly attracted attention for a reason police may not have anticipated, with social media users questioning why officers were involved in what appeared to be a dispute over just $30.
One social media user recalled accidentally leaving cashback behind at a store and said a manager had described it as being “like dropping money on the street.”
The commenter added that there was ultimately nothing they could do and said they simply “blessed the person” who found the money.
Others questioned whether police resources were being used appropriately, while another commenter described the situation as “the most unintentionally hilarious” example of the relevant Georgia law they had encountered.
Another person shared a family story about finding cash on the floor of a Home Depot near New York City.
According to their account, staff refused to take the money, and the family eventually donated it to a church collection.
Despite the online controversy, the situation was ultimately resolved without charges.
Albany Police later issued an update confirming that the unidentified man had returned the $30 to the person who originally lost it.
Police explained that the alleged victim had “initially wished to pursue charges”.
"The victim initially wished to pursue charges, but after the money was returned, advised that they no longer wished to press charges. No charges will be filed," they wrote in the post.
The original appeal nevertheless continued to attract significant attention online, with users debating whether the department should have publicised the incident in the first place.
While some criticized the decision to seek public help over $30, others defended the police department, arguing that officers were simply attempting to identify a person connected to an active report at the time.
