People call out hypocrisy as resurfaced Donald Trump tweet from 2016 goes viral
President Donald Trump is once again facing criticism under the familiar idea that “there is always a tweet.” An old post from 2016 has resurfaced, showing him criticizing Barack Obama for behavior that many now accuse Trump himself of repeating.
Trump is well known for spending time on the golf course, and critics say he takes any chance he can to play, even during serious situations. This was highlighted over the weekend, when he was seen golfing at one of his 15 golf courses, this time at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, while the Iran war he initiated had reached its fourth week.
Trump's criticism of Obama in 2016
At the same time, a shutdown affecting the Department of Homeland Security meant TSA agents were not being paid, contributing to long queues and major delays at airports due to staff shortages, with many missing their scheduled flights.
The situation drew attention because of a tweet Trump posted on May 21, 2016, which has now gone viral again. In it, he criticized Obama, writing: “While our wonderful president was out playing golf all day, the TSA is falling apart, just like our government! Airports a total disaster!”
Many people were quick to highlight the irony. One person reacted simply with, “Well, well, well,” while another joked: “This guy is genuinely really good at predicting things. Just not in the way he thinks.”
According to the website didtrumpgolftoday.com, which tracks his time on the golf course, Trump had played golf on 101 out of 428 days since returning to office at the time the article was written, about 23.6% of his time.
Trump's golfing clashes with Homeland Security funding dispute and Iran war
This update comes after a shutdown at the Department of Homeland Security, meaning there has been an impasse on payment to employees, resulting in almost 500 TSA staff quitting their jobs, and thousands of others not showing up for work.
With Congress currently in a funding stand-off, approximately 61,000 government employees have been caught in the crossfire. AFGE National union boss Everett Kelley voiced his outrage at the situation: “I’ve never been more disgusted by the failure of elected leadership.”
Meanwhile, the United States’ war with Iran continues, as the Strait of Hormuz remains shut, although according to reports, Trump is leaning further into resolving the dispute in the Middle East through diplomacy.
