Pam Bondi has reportedly been diagnosed with thyroid cancer shortly after being removed from her role by Donald Trump.
The 60-year-old has reportedly already undergone treatment and is now recovering.
This news emerged alongside claims that Trump is planning to appoint Bondi to a new advisory role focused on artificial intelligence policy.
Axios reported that Bondi is expected to join the Presidential Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST), an advisory group that helps shape science and technology strategy in the US.
Bondi’s departure from the Justice Department reportedly came on the same day she accompanied Trump to the Supreme Court during oral arguments in a major case concerning birthright citizenship.
Following news of her diagnosis, supporters took to social media to praise Bondi and wish her well during recovery.
Podcast host and former White House official Katie Miller wrote on X: “Pam has been quietly kicking cancer’s ass the last few weeks.”
She added: “[Bondi] has a heart of gold.”
According to the Cleveland Clinic, most forms of thyroid cancer are highly treatable, especially if caught quickly, with survival rates considered extremely positive when caught early.
The clinic states that the five-year survival rate for thyroid cancer patients is above 98 percent, with outcomes generally described as 'excellent'.
The news has also drawn comparisons to Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, who previously revealed he secretly battled thyroid cancer while serving in the White House during Trump’s first administration.
In his memoir, Kushner explained that he underwent surgery to remove a tumour from his throat while continuing to oversee Middle East policy matters. He later had a second thyroid operation four years ago.
Despite leaving her role as attorney general, Bondi recently made clear she still plans to support Trump politically.
“Leading President Trump’s historic and highly successful efforts to make America safer and more secure has been the honor of a lifetime, and easily the most consequential first year of the Department of Justice in American history,” she wrote on X last month.
“I remain eternally grateful for the trust that President Trump placed in me to Make America Safe Again.”
Trump has since appointed Todd Blanche as interim attorney general while a permanent replacement is selected.
According to health experts, common symptoms of thyroid cancer can include:
Other possible symptoms may include coughing, weight loss, flushing, diarrhoea, or changes in bowel habits.
