Mother slammed for naming baby after disaster that impacted millions
Most of us are stuck with our baby names until adulthood when we can legally change them via deed poll. So, giving your child a name that can safeguard them from bullying in their formative years is often a major decision… if becoming a parent didn’t already come with enough responsibility.
Recently, a Reddit user known as kittysogood shared a baby shower invitation on the r/tragedeigh forum, drawing attention to a particularly surprising name choice.
What was the weird name in question?
Posting the image, they wrote, “Welp.. I just got invited to a baby shower…,” alongside a card decorated with cute images of stars, elephants, and hearts.
The invitation itself read: “Please join us for a baby shower. Join us to celebrate the upcoming arrival of a little bundle of joy! We can’t wait to celebrate together!”
While many parents prefer to keep baby names private until after birth, often due to superstition or to avoid outside opinions, this family openly shared their choice ahead of time.
The reaction online was immediate. One person wrote, “This has to be fake. There's no way this is real.” Another added, “I refuse to believe this is real lol.” A third commenter said, “OP, I don't want to believe this is real, but if it is, could you PLEASE come back here and update us on how the baby shower went (please go)?”
They continued, “You know everyone in that room is going to be super uncomfortable, waiting for the one brave person to bust wide open and just ask the question. It's going to be hilarious. I want to know how the question is asked and what the response is. I need all the juice.”
The reason for the strong reactions? The baby’s name was revealed to be “Chernobyl Hope.”
The Chernobyl Disaster and the backlash that followed
The Chernobyl Disaster was a catastrophic nuclear accident that took place in Ukraine in 1986. It remains one of the most severe nuclear incidents ever recorded and is widely regarded as the costliest disaster in history.
According to the International Atomic Energy Agency, 31 people died in the immediate aftermath, while hundreds of thousands of cleanup workers—often referred to as “liquidators”—were exposed to high levels of radiation, with long-term impacts affecting many more.
Given the tragedy associated with the name, many found the choice shocking. However, the original poster suggested the parents may not have known the history behind it.
“I have a feeling they don’t know what Chernobyl meant. I asked them where they got the idea from and said it just sounded nice????,” they wrote.
Some tried to defend the choice, pointing out, “I mean, the word Chernobyl was originally the name of a common mugwort plant, a medicinal herb.” However, they also acknowledged the cultural weight of certain names, adding, “But there’s a reason we don’t name children Adol[f] any longer, even if that name was relatively innocuous before 1939.”
Others strongly disagreed with the decision. One person commented, “This is so, so bad. They have to be told. Give them a book about Chernobyl as a gift for the baby shower. Because no.”
According to reports, the parents planned to use the nickname “Cherry” for the child. The original poster added, “I'll let you guys know when I have an update.
This invitation was sent in a group chat and was also personally sent to me. I just can't believe they would name a baby girl Chernobyl. I'll gather enough courage to tell them my thoughts.”
