1. Warmth
Basically, we're all looking for ways to stay warm in the winter, without racking up some serious gas bills. However, due to the fact we all become a bit more unsociable during the colder months, this can actually lead to us feeling physically cold. According to Cohen, having a winter friend with benefits can help us avoid that feeling. “The feeling of togetherness, belongingness, is going to give you the warm fuzzies,” Cohen says. “If people are feeling cold, feeling like they are being accepted by others can lead to feelings of warmth.”
2. Attraction
According to a 2008 study from the University of Wroclaw in Poland, men are more attracted to women in winter than any other time of the year. Apparently, this is due to the fact that as women wear more clothes in winter, guys get more excited at the sight of skin than when women are scantily-clad in the summer. Basically, it's the whole 'wanting what you can't have' school of thought.
3. We're hornier
During the winter months, men's testosterone levels rocket due to climate and sleep pattern changes. Testosterone, as I'm sure you know, regulates male sex drives and the higher the level, the hornier they are.
4. You're more likely to be depressed
While this may seem sad, it can have a boost in your sex life. According to research, our bodies produce less serotonin (a neurotransmitter which affects our happiness levels) in the winter, meaning we feel a bit more bummed out than usual. “Our brains tend to produce less serotonin due to decreases in sun exposure, and this is thought to contribute to more feelings of loneliness and depression in the winter months,” says Dr. Justin Lehmiller, a faculty affiliate of The Kinsey Institute. “It’s possible that these changes in mood might stimulate a desire to connect with a partner.”
5. Christmas
It's not called the most wonderful time of the year for nothing, folks! "Part of the reason we’re more likely to have sex in December, especially around the winter holidays, is that many of us take breaks and vacations from work and school, which means that we’re going to be less stressed,” says Dr. Lehmiller. “People are also attending lots of fun parties and social gatherings at this time as well, and it may be that all of that merrymaking gets people in the mood.”
