These days, it seems that people will go to some fairly extreme lengths in order to achieve what they believe to be a perfect body. Some folks go the healthy route, sticking to a sensible diet and a regular exercise routine, while others splash out on surgery, extreme food fads, and top dollar lotions and potions which claim to make you look 10 years younger.
Unsurprisingly, a lot of these alternative methods of staying in shape and looking sharp can leave people will some potentially nasty damage. Tanning beds, in particular, are notorious for causing damage to people's skin, and have been known to cause cancer before.
And nobody knows that better than Mallory Lubbock.
Lubbock had been using tanning beds since she was just 16 years old, sometimes going in for sessions every single day. Unfortunately, after years of subjecting herself to the ultraviolet rays, she developed skin cancer.
"So, today I got my first cancerous spot removed," said Mallory in an honest Facebook post. "I now get to go back for suture removal/wound check, an appointment to get my WHOLE body checked out, VERY routine check ups for a long while, and then routine check ups for life, and almost 100% certainly many more painful ass appointments of getting skin cancer taken off my body."
She went on:
"Damn it 16 year old Mallory that went tanning every single day for two years. I will try like hell to make sure my daughter will not be laying in a single tanning bed while she is under my roof and I hope her just hearing about and seeing Mama go through this will be enough.
"You guys. Get your daughters out of tanning beds. Get your 16 year old sister out of them. Hell, get out of them yourselves! It’s so not worth it. Is tan skin REALLY worth it? This sh*t will scar and this sh*t HURT. I am now the mom at the beach with the umbrella and my spf 100 HEAVILY applied. Never ever ever did I think this would happen to me (who does?)"
Not only does Lubbock now have a gnarly scar on her upper lip, then, she also has to worry about recurring skin cancer for the rest of her life.
Since she was so young when she started the treatments, she had no idea of the risk she was putting herself under. In fact, what many people haven't been told is that many sunbeds actually give out stronger UV rays than a midday sun in a tropical location. Plus, as people obviously don't put on any sun cream before they climb into one of the beds (whereas they probably would if they were heading for a day at the beach), they receive a much higher concentration of radiation than they usually would.
All in all, tanning beds seem to do basically the opposite of what they're intended to do. Sure, they might give you a natural-looking glow for a little while, but excessive use can cause cancer, premature aging, and damage to the eyes.
So, if you're really desperate for that bronzed look, perhaps consider going for the bottled option.

A young woman was booted out of a shopping mall for her "illegal" outfit that showed off her midriff.
As reported by News.com.au, a 20-year-old named Madison Green was at Dalby Shoppingworld in south-east Queensland to buy groceries for her grandmother.
However, her shopping trip was cut short after she was confronted by a female security guard who ordered her to leave because of the black crop top she was sporting.
Footage of the confrontation (obtained by Nine News) showed Green asked the woman: "'What's your issue?" to which the security guard fired back: "I can see your stomach."
Green demanded answers so she pointed out: "How come there's a store in here that sells clothing like this but I can't wear it in here?" but the guard replied by noting that she needed to cover her stomach.
When a male individual off camera asked why there was a problem with Green's outfit, the woman said: "Because that's the law."
It was at this point that another woman walked by wearing a sports top that exposed her torso, so a confused Green exclaimed: "She's not wearing a top."
However, the guard claimed that she saw Green first which is why she is escorting her out of the shopping mall. She then called her a "smart a**" and demanded that she leave.
The video then shows the security guard following Green in and out of a Woolworths supermarket. "Leave me alone, stop following me!" the young woman called out. "That’s my job," the guard said and kept following.
Speaking to Nine News about the ordeal, the young woman said: "I know for a fact that I'm allowed to wear these things, it's 2024, I don't see any issue with it whatsoever."
Many dress codes at work do not allow an exposed belly, but there is no rule forbidding one from wearing clothing items such as crop tops in public spaces.
A spokesperson for Dalby Shoppingworld confirmed that Green was not in breach of any clothing rules as they shared a statement that read: "Centre management has apologized to the patron and has been in discussion with the contracted security company and requested that they review their procedures to make sure their staff have appropriate training.
"This particular security officer involved won't be assigned to Dalby Shoppingworld in the future," they added.

An investigation has been launched into the GoFundMe account of Tessica Brown - the woman who went viral earlier this month after applying Gorilla Glue brand adhesive to her hair in lieu of hairspray.
In a recent virtual interview with The New York Post, 40-year-old Brown stated that, although she had pledged to give the money she had raised to charity, her GoFundMe account has been temporarily suspended due to reports from a number of users that it was fraudulent.
When Brown first set up the fundraiser, she was only asking for $1,500 - but that soon skyrocketed to $23,000 after her story went viral on social media.
Now, per The Post, Brown has stated that she has been unable to access the money. She said:
"They [GoFundMe] won’t even release it to me because that many people have called and said it was a fraudulent account. Every time you look at it, it says it’s under investigation."
TMZ previously reported that Brown intended on donating the majority of the $23,000 raised to the Restore Foundation - a non-profit organization that provides reconstructive surgery services for those in need.
The organization is run by Beverly Hills-based plastic surgeon Dr. Michael Obeng, who kindly offered to perform the four-hour-long procedure required to dissolve the glue and save Brown's hair for free, after learning about her plight on social media.
TMZ further reported that Tessica planned on keeping $1,000 of the GoFundMe cash to pay for the emergency room visit she made in Louisiana before going to visit Dr. Obeng in Los Angeles.
Brown continued:
"I'm like: 'We can donate to Dr. Obeng… and the rest of that I’m going to donate it to three families in St. Bernard Parish.'
"That’s going to be pretty upsetting because who are y’all to say, you know, this was a fraudulent account?
"For one, Dr. Obeng brought me from St. Bernard Parish to Hollywood [...] to take this out of my head. Like, this man didn’t have to do none of this.
"No matter what I do it’s a problem."
In an official statement issued to The New York Post, a GoFundMe spokesperson stated that the site was "working with her on the withdrawal of funds," before adding: "Prior to the withdrawal, [Brown] must clearly state on the campaign page how she intends to use the funds."
The original video was posted to TikTok earlier this month when Brown uploaded a clip of herself explaining that she had mistakenly used the glue to style her hair after running out of hairspray.
Tessica told her followers that her hair hack had worked and held her hair perfectly in place. In fact, it had worked a little too well - sticking her hair in the same style for a month despite 13 hair-washing attempts.

In a world where you can buy just about any physical attribute, people love speculating about who has and hasn't had plastic surgery. This is especially the case for models who make a living off their "assets".
However, ascertaining whether or not someone has had plastic surgery can be a nigh impossible task.
Kylie Jenner, for example, denied having lip fillers at first and simply claimed that she created her now famous pout from lipliner before eventually confessing to having had work done.
Now, to prove once and for all that her derrière is real, an Instagram model had a plastic surgeon inspect her butt after people on the image sharing website claimed that she'd bought it.
This is the moment plastic surgeon Ashkan Ghavami confirmed that Keech's butt was real:

Nineteen-year-old model l Daisy Keech, pictured above, while visiting Beverly Hills plastic surgeon Ashkan Ghavami for something else, had him inspect her butt and confirm that it was real to her 875,000 followers.

The surgeon took look a close look at the teen's butt, confirming that there were no signs of her having had any work done like incisions. Ghavami then described the 19-year-old as being "genetically blessed".
"Her buttocks are real, so I told her, you know what, a lot of people are hatin' on you saying your butt's not real, so I'm gonna certify it as a butt expert. It's real," he said.

He explained:
"I know it's real for multiple reasons. First of all, her age. She's never had kids. And if you look right here, her buttock has a lot of firmness to it, it has good volume,' he said, turning her to the side as the camera zooms in.
"I don't see any skin changes that means she's had anything artificial injected. I don't see any little incisions that point to fat transfer.
"She has 19-year-old tight, tight skin and she does hip thrusts, she actually eats meat, she eats a really well-balanced diet and she does mostly bulk muscle training.
"So all of that, her youth, and all of this points to the fact that this is a real buttock. It's certified Ghavami real."
Well, that's one way to prove a point!
Incredibly, Keech is not the first person to have her butt certified real. Kim Kardashian also visited a plastic surgeon in 2011 for a butt x-ray to prove that hers was in an episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians.
